I have an Extra power spring in my CZ97b which was already installed by the previous owner. I just ordered an extra power spring for my new Makarov. I have seen recomendations for upgrading the springs on both of these guns. This got me thinking about putting extra power springs in other guns. For example my CZ75b, Kahr K9, and possibly my XD9 which would take a little more work than the other two. Does anyone have experience with adding extra power springs to any of these guns. I like the fact that it keeps the brass in close. Some think it is less wear and tear on the gun.
I also started to think that with extra power springs may actually cause damage as they slam back forward with more force. Any thoughts about this?

Less wear against the frame, more against the slide stop. The frame is more expensive to repair, but less likely to be damaged in the first place. I don't think it really matters enough to worry about.

CZ factory springs are a bit weak, and the CZ-USA gunsmith recommends Wolff springs as replacement. I have a 16 lb spring in my 75B and it runs fine with target ammo.

Reliable function is my main concern, though, so I tend toward factory weight springs, even after they get a bit worn.

I've been replacing my 1911 recoil springs with 18# springs from Wolff. And I replace the recoil spring on my EAA 40 with a 16# Wolff (which according to their website, is the factory weight for CZ 40s but not for EAA 40s  )

I've always used the factory weights for my Glock and my Taurus and I haven't shot my Mak or Kahr enough to warrant a replacement spring yet. I think I'll stick with the factory weight in the Mak and will order a 20 and a 22 # spring for the Kahr and see what's what. :p

There's some very interesting discussion on recoil spring weight over at the brianenos.com forums. It really made me re-examine what I thought I knew.

Extra-heavy recoil springs are rarely, if ever, desireable. But the myth that heavy recoil springs reduce recoil and make your gun last longer dies hard.
