just wondering the first photo is how it looked when I got it , then the 2nd is how it looked after some sand paper, spray paint, and wood stain and an hour of time.
Does it look good for only have 15 bucks worth if sand paper and paint and stain used
To each his own but since you asked my opinion I prefer a nice wood finish to plastic, paint, or skeletonized. I do think you did well on the barrel scheme though!
ha, Chevy, not sure what that is, but it sure isn't real stainless. Just sanded the blue off might clear coat it or something to give it some protection. I decided to do this color scheme since my girlfriend likes the blue so I just ran with it
What really matters is if you like it or not. I do prefer the wood and blued metal look, but the second one is kind of bold. Any reason you didn't refinish the stock ahead of the barrel band? That kind of jumps out at me, and not in a good way. Same with the receiver and front site.
I'd think if all the metal was stainless-looking and the whole stock blue, it'd look real sharp.
what they said ^^^^
Not my thing, but if you like it, hey, that's what counts. That's the beauty of it being yours, who gives a darn what others think. They can do their stuff their way. For what its worth, it looks like you did a good job on it.
If you had taken your time a bit more on prepping and finishing the stock, it would look much better. I refinished the stock on my Mossberg 320KA recently, and I spent about 20 minutes stripping the old lacquer off the stock, then almost 2 days sanding and refinishing. The wood really captures the light now. Stain for wood can be found in many colors, and if you can't find a stain in the color you want, leather dye works too.
Your barrel needs some kind of protective finish or coating since you sanded off the bluing, otherwise it WILL rust. I've used automotive clearcoat and clear engine enamel to good result when I wanted the stainless look with carbon steel.
Here's my before and after. I haven't decided yet what I want to do with the metal on mine, I might parkerize it, but I think it looks good as is. The pictures are a bit fuzzy, but they get the point across... A little bit more time, no matter what finish you choose, will make your project look much better.
(A better shot showing the detail of the wood - this is completely finished and dry)
BrockAK47, if you plan on keeping the barrel and band in-the-white, besides maintaining a coat of oil, you can also wax the barrel. I did this with my Harper's Ferry 1805 pistol that I didn't want to brown or otherwise finish (or inspect ever other month to oil/inspect for surface rust). I believe the stuff I used is made by Flitz.
I will look into clear coating it for sure. I actually sanded the tip of the barrel too, but then sprayed the end with flat black high temp paint for grills lol
it actually started out blued, then I painted it. Didn't like it so i sanded it down. It looked like this the first time i painted the barrel
I don't really like the black tip and forend accents, but I like the rest. you can get away with crazy colors on a 22. I've got a greem one and a red one. I like the blue, and I just recently put a stainless barrel on my blued gun. I like the look.
I'm in the "if your happy with it that's what counts" group. Personally I wouldn't want it but it's not mine. Different opinions are why there are so many different styled products available in almost anything you can buy.
Now then you should see the 10/22 I just finished building. It's going to get some really strange looks at the range but I'm happy with it. My gun, my way.
You can go to arts and crafts stores and get a design, apply it to the part, have someone bead blast it and get all kinds of designs.
Uhh, thanks Snowdog. I think.
that's neat Red, and to honestly, I didn't want to spend a fortune on a little .22 fun gun- though a nicer trigger would make it more fun =p.
and I don't really care about the look or the color, just knowing it's only costing me .3 cents a round instead of .50+ with other calibers.. I could shoot it pink purple blue brown black silver ah who cares. Just was wondering what others thought about the cheap make over lol. My girlfriend loves it, I have been trying to order her a blue frame nickel slide walther p22, but I can't find one ANYWHERE so I did the next best thing and made this 10/22 blue for her.
I liked the "before", but if it works for ya, great! It certainly looks different.
If you're going to give the "stainless" a clear coat, I'd suggest a high temp clear coat enamel spray. It should wear well, since there are no moving parts to worry about.
