Ive been looking into buying a new rifle. I read an article in Rifle Firepower about the Savage Mark II TRR-SR. The author seemed to like it alright. I've also found some consumer reviews on other forums boasting its accuracy with quality ammo. So I guess I'm asking whether it's worth $500 for a .22. I already have a 10/22 which I thought was the most versatile .22 money could buy. Or I could raise I budget a bit and pop for a Savage 10 precision carbine. I don't know. Any comments, thoughts or advice?

It all depends on what you want to do with your .22 shooting.

While the 10/22's are a very fun gun to shoot most of the reports I've read don't consider them to be in the match grade sort of level for accuracy. If this matters to you then adding a better bolt action rifle to your .22 quiver would not be a bad option.

From the Savage rimfires I've shot I'd say there are few that deliver as much accuracy performance for the buck as the Savage.

I don't own one myself. Just got to shoot a few that belonged to other folks. They always gave me groups that I felt were better than my ability... :D

I have a savage mark II in a simpler configuration. I like it alot and would recommend it, but I don't care for the TRR-SR variation.

It definitely has more accuracy than a stock 10/22. With a box of 100rnd/$7 i can put 5 shots into 2 inches at 50 yards when i am steady on the sandbags. The 10/22 I had was much larger than that. I bet someone willing to spend more for ammo and carefully clean it could do half that. (I am not a comptetive shooter, and I always go to windy outdoor ranges.)

However high end 10/22 barrels will shoot as well or better than it. For the price of the TRR-SR, I think you could put a really good barrel on the 10/22. MY preference is for a more traditional look, so (in a different year) I might spend >$500 on a CZ or Ruger 22lr with the wood and blue steel look. Or have a custom 10/22.

What is having YOUR 22lr resemble an expensive tactical bolt action worth?

for my money i would go with a regular wood and blued mkII.you should be able to find a new one for 250$ or less unless you are willing to pay for the tactical look.

Oh no don't get the MkII, mine was defective, it would only make one hole in the paper no matter how many times I shot it :D LOL All joking aside I have shot many a premium rifle, and NOTHING grouped as well as that little $125 Savage, not cloverleafs, it shot semi-smooth hole groups all day long! simply amazing little gun, though mine did have one real defect, the trigger would wobble side to side a little, but with accuracy like that I was sure not about to complain. I almost cried when that gun got stolen

They really are quite nice rifles. I have the FVT version, the one with target peep sights on it, and my only complaint is that the comb doesn't bring my eye anywhere close to the level of the sights. That's just how rimfires seem to be these days, though, and it was easy enough to fix by taping a fat paperback book to the stock as a makeshift cheekpiece.

im going to get one of the stainless thumhole jobs for garden rabbits. it was my pick after a lot of searching, i have an old marlin semi now, it is accurate but the trigger is so heavy its hard to shoot accurately.

...the trigger would wobble side to side a little

You can do the trigger job on the non accutrigger MKII's and fix the wobble and the pull weight.

I have the FVT version, the one with target peep sights on it, and my only complaint is that the comb doesn't bring my eye anywhere close to the level of the sights.

That's why I like the Boyds stock on mine but you could get a Kydex adjustable cheek rest for that stock and it would work very well.

Wow looks like some positive responses. I actually like the wood look over the synthetic. That brown laminate looks awesome with the blued. Looks like a Mark II will have to find its way to my collection.

Thanks for the responses.
