Thoughts on STI?

They make wonderful 1911, but I would not buy from them do to thier biz practices/ grand standing.

STI makes great 1911s and has some of the better customer service you will find.

I am having problems with my STI spartan (failure to feed hollowpoints) I called them up and they answered on the first ring and told me to stop on by during my lunch hour for them to polish my feeding ramp....I love living down the road from them :)

I have a STI 45 and it'll feed anything, even a mag mixed with FMJ and hollowpoints. Very good gun, never had a single glitch or hiccup.

Not to mention STI's stand on Kaliforia...

Cessation of California Firearm Sales

As a company, STI adhered to California’s drop test certification and DOJ listing process in 1998 for the
people in competition shooting and for those who desired self-protection DESPITE the financial strain
placed on a small company such as ours. Listing our two most popular firearm models was not an
inexpensive undertaking. We even redesigned our compensator systems to adhere to the CA “no
threaded barrel” law. Then CA’s onerous liability laws were enacted and we chose at that time not to
renew certification nor to sell to LEO and governmental agencies in CA, regardless of their exempt
status, because there was no exemption from liability or legal fees which could bankrupt this company.
When federal law overrode CA’s liability laws, we resumed LE sales because we felt our product could be
used to LE’s advantage. With the micro stamping bill, we as a company have decided enough is enough.
While our sales to Law Enforcement agencies are not huge, all revenue sources are important to a
company of our size and it hurts us to turn our backs on those revenues.
While we truly feel badly for the law-abiding citizens of California, we feel it is necessary to take a stand
against irresponsible legislation designed solely to inhibit the American citizen’s right to keep arms. We
are fierce proponents of the Second Amendment, and it is our hope that other manufacturers will follow
our lead. It is time for the gun industry as a whole to take a stand against the insanity of the anti-2nd
Amendment activists. We simply believe that some things are more important than profit.
In all honesty, when we made this decision we had no idea of the responses, both positive and negative,
it would evoke. We just did what we thought was right and, because of our size, didn’t really expect
much notice. Since we announced this new policy however, we have been deluged by customers
contacting us to show their support and by others who consider it a “stunt” of some type. We greatly
appreciate all of the supporting comments and would like to thank everyone who has taken the time to
express, even contrary, opinions. We do understand that this action on our part will have little effect on
California’s criminal or political element.
To our loyal supporters in California, we sincerely regret the measures we feel we must take and will
continue to honor all warrantee obligations. We hope for a speedy resolution of this ill-conceived
violation of the Second Amendment.

actually thier stand on CA was why I don't like them...

They said they were not going to meet the regs for CA several years ago and they were not going to sale gun in CA... more power too you... but they still sold guns to LEO in CA.( I personally took orders for several "race" guns that were going to LEO...)

Then this year they made another statement saying how... selling guns in CA was hurting them and they were going to stop selling them in CA. Of corse they had that spamed all over the net... only prob was you had to be LEO to buy guns from them anyways in CA.

So forgive me if I don't like the company. They make a great product, but that does not make then a great company.

STI Ls9

I bought an STI Ls9 about two years ago and was initially pleased by the ergonomics of the pistol, scalloped front strap, and other nice details. After shooting the pistol extensively, however, I was a bit disappointed. Machining for the rear sight was not a good fit for the sight's dovetail, and I did a bit of free-hand engineering to get things aright. Having your rear sight fall from the pistol while shooting is an eye-opener. Literally.

This is my only experience with STI and others, including Stephen A. Camp, have written positively about thir own STI firearms. Perhaps my experience is just one of those bad draws that happen from time to time.

I have been pleased with every STI product I've owned/used. I actually have one of their 6" hi-cap frames for sale right now, NIB. Was planning to build an IPSC gun with it but don't have the cash to finish the gun.

My brand new, $1800 Edge failed me at the 9th stage of the Florida State Championship. Extractor shattered with less than 500 rounds in it. Zeroed the stage and cost me placing in my class...at least I like to think so. I still get made thinking about how such an expensive gun could have such a cheap part, and a critical part at that. But its THE gun for uspsa and shoots great. I would never buy another product fromt them though. I wrote them about it and expressed my deep displeasure and they essentially told me too bad, things break. I guess in STI's case you DO NOT get what you pay for.

Two thoughts on the
Cessation of California Firearm Sales

1) I don't know how big a company STI is, but from some e-mailed discussions I've had with SIG they can only put certain models (220 ST Elite, coming in 2009! :D) through the CA-trials due to the cost...so it must be very pricey.

2) Now I heard this at a gun shop...so you can take it with a grain of salt, but the 2010 microstamping law is going to be a giant pain as some manufacturers are going to, in a way STI has, boycott Cali all together. Now I don't believe all things I hear in a gun shop, but one more hoop to jump through could conceivably just break my back, and make things that much more of a pain in the @$$.
