Thoughts on the AMD 65?

They're good guns, accurate enough. Barrel is less than 16in, so you have to get a longer muzzle brake or extension and permanently attach it.
30 rounders are difficult to remove due to the foregrip being in the way--the wooden ones will get marred during the reload process.
The rear buttstock can come off, fragile for an AK platform, imo.
I have one as pictured just for the collection, but built others with a standard AK rear trunnion. If I want a folder on it, I'd just add a romy side folder.
I'd not recommend one as your only AK, unless you just really like the style. (and it is cool looking.)

I got a Yugo-style underfolder once. It looked so cool, I pretty much had to have it. I ended up selling it because it just wasn't that easy to shoot (good cheek weld is tough). On the AMD65, I don't know how you get any kind of cheek weld. I know I would have been alot more satisfied with a regular AK. I think if you had an AMD65 and a regular fixed stock AK, the AMD65 would be the one you'd show friends when they came over, but the fixed stock would be the one in the car everytime you packed for the range.
If you haven't already, do yourself a favor and try shooting an AMD65 before you buy one. I think you'll realize it's very cool, but not nearly as practical.

The commies issued these to tank crews, so theirs had 14" barrels for maneuvrability. If you build one from a kit, you need to make sure it meets barrel length laws.

They are neat looking but I found that style folding stock to be very uncomfortable. When J&G first got these in I ran down there to check them out and possibly buy one. However as soon as I got one in my hands and raised it to my shoulder I changed my mind and left. I found that folding stock very uncomfortable even worse than the underfolder style which I hate also.
They were selling for $430 which isn't bad if you want something a little different than your average WASR model. Personally I would rather spend the money and get a Yugo, even a Yugo underfolder before I'd spend the money on the AMD.

The pistol version is fun. No an esepcially good or useful gun, but fun.

The AMD 65 is about the worst designed AK ever conceived. Besides that, it looks cool.

Duh--you are correct, of course. I primarily build mine and the kits have the shorty barrel. A couple of years ago you could get the complete '65 kits for $59. Throw in a receiver and compliance parts and that's a dang cheap AK, if you got the tools.
