Thoughts on the new 350 Legend caliber?

Which state is not allowing it due to the caliber?
The cartridge is in contention in Iowa. Regulations state .357 caliber. SAAMI shows groove diameter of .355. I’m understand there was a law introduced changing the wording to 35 caliber. Supposedly that has been challenged by Iowa bow hunters.

Ohio also says .357 but I have not heard anything other than speculation. Michigan says 35 caliber, so good to go there. Pennsylvania I have not heard anything. There is just a lot of controversy about the cartridge.

Post the whole picture. Groove diameter .355. Bore diameter .346.

As a former Ohio resident I wrote an email to ODNR about the 350 Legend and deer hunting out of curiosity and they said it would be legal. Somewhere there is a thread about that here on THR.

When you take into account the bore and groove diameters and bullet diameter AND the associated tolorances from the SAAMI specs you can argue for bullet diameters from .355-357 fairly easily.

But if you look at minimal bore area in the SAAMI specs 350 Legend is the same as 9 Luger and both are smaller than 357 mag.

Foil hat firmly on: I think Winchester initially designed 350 Legend to use a 9mm (.355) diameter bullets. A representative from Winchester at the NRA show told me it was a 9mm rifle even when I asked him .355 vs .357. Nearly all reports of initially released factory ammo dissection show .355 diameter bullets. Barrels made with early chamber reamers report issues chambering reloads with .357 diameter bullets. Etc... I think they realized .355 diameter bullets will run afoul of some mid-west states hunting regulations and have ex-post-facto are changing it to .357. The Winchester website lists it as .357 diameter bullets despite evidence from people measure ammo at .355.

That's my cracked theory and I am sticking to it. ;)

From my earlier thread on 350 Legend, you have to take all the tolorances into account too.

"The interesting thing though is if you look at the SAAMI spec for 9mm Luger 357 Mag and 350 Legend The dimension for lands and groove diameter for all three barrels nominal dimension is exactly the same. Lands: .346, Grooves: 355. Now both 9mm Luger and 357 Magnum have +.004 tolerance on those dimension. The 350 Legend has only a +.002 on its nominal bore and groove.

Bullet diameter are list as:
9mm Luger: .3555
350 Legend: .3570
357 Magnum: .3580 (.3590 for lead)
All have a -.003 tolerance on the bullet diameter.

One additional interesting data point is SAAMI always puts a minimum bore are for a cartridge and in many ways bore area is more critical than absolute land and groove diameters. 350 Legend share exactly the same minimum bore are as 9x19mm .0967 in^2 where 357 Mag has a very slightly larger minimal bore are of .0969 in^2.”
