Is there a good way to carry shooting gear, especially a rifle on a bike?

I wouldn't do it unless you have a decent hardcase for the long gun. Then you will have to try it out sideways across the back luggage rack and saddlebags. I've been thinking about making a small trailer for my next bike (I will be selling the current one and getting a Kawasaki Nomad). I figure I'll set up a basic frame with wheels and a lockdown system to swap between my cowboy action gun cart and a regular enclosed cargo container. I just have this urge to show up at a cowboy match on my "steel horse," I'll probably make the gun cart in the shape of a coffin with wirespoke wheels at the base for moving it from stage to stage.

I,ve been riding for over 35 years. My current ride is a 2000 Suzuki SV650. I love that bike.
Hey Kaxter, ya ought to get rid of those mirrors and go for the bar-end type. I also added a Suzuki tank bra to protect the finish.
When I ride I carry my Kahr E-9 in an Anderson Enterprises hip pistol pack. I found that in the forward leaning position my pistol was to often exposed to the elements and other drivers. The pistol pouch takes care of both concealment and road grime.

I get the urge to buy a bike every year when it warms up. I've yet to be able to afford it yet:(

I was thinking a shoulder holster (or IWB if the back's long enough) under a perforated leather or nylon jacket (from Fox Creek).
[thread drift] I worked with Paul (the owner I guess) on one or two occasions and he seemed to be a pretty stand-up guy, anyone have any experiance with him? [/thread drift]

I need to get a bike...

'01 Honda Valkyrie Interstate, 32k miles.

I either carry IWB like I normally do or put a M640 in the trunk. We're going on a 4,000 mile ride in July and I'm not sure what I'll do for that, since some of the states we're going through are not gun-friendly.

On our Valkyrie forum board there are actually yahoos who believe they could draw, fire and avert a situation such as someone crossing over to hit them. Pure lunacy! A Vegas bike cop told me thay practice shooting from the bike but it's not soemthing he has done for real and it's nothing he ever wants to do. Stop, get off, then draw. :)

Beaut' piece of 2 wheeled real estate Don! I thought my Mustang seat was comfy but hey ... lookin at that one of yours ... that's an armchair!:p

Looks like you could stash a few pieces in that luggage capacity ... don't forget the hand cannon!!;)

Had that surgery yet? (knee IIRC) - I forget when it was due ... had a feeling it's done already ... anyways hope all is well.

Thanks Chris - wish we could ride together sometime! That Corbin seat is great but it's not the softest and I put a gel pad on it for long trips.

I think I will take the 640 - always somewhere to hide it in those bags! :)

Had the surgery last Friday and am having nothing but trouble sleeping, as the Percocet thay gave me only last 2-3 hours so I wake up alot. Now they're working on getting me some Oxycontin.

Nice Valk!!

WHAT HE SAID!

My next bike will be a Valk. I get to ride one that belongs to a friend of mine and it is a SWEET ride. <Gunrelated content>I will still carry a 1911 in an Alessi IWB when I Sell the Road* and get a Valk </Gunrelated content>

Hey Valkman,

Nice bike! my brother has one and loves it. I bought a BMW 1150GS in 2000 and it came down to picking either the Valk or the BMW. BMW won, narrowly, and I still lust after the Valkyrie. I sometimes lurk on the VRRCC boards. It's a real pity that Honda stopped making Valkyries - probably the best cruiser ever.

On another note, I notice everyone has mentioned holsters on the hip. Why not a shoulder holster - wouldn't that be more practical?

It might be, but I don't own one so I don't know! :D

Thanks for the compliments on the bike. I'm Interstate Don on the VRCC boards, and I'm supposed to be going on the Yosemite trip in a couple of weeks if my knee allows it.

I have tried a sho rig ... but only in less warm times when I have leather jacket on .. then it's OK. However ... in the event of a spill I think on balance I'd as soon not have a hunk of metal up that high, to impact my rib cage! Even on the hip is not too nice to contemplate if that impacts the ground but .. well, I think I'll go with that in preference.

I have found of late, that a very light vest I have does well .... it is quite long and sleeveless ....... and my back rest holds it from flapping at the side ... keeps my SP-101 well concealed.

Don ... two weeks will hopefully see things way better for you .... I had a drastically injured knee joint a few years back ('96 IIRC) .. for first week I could hardly drive a car and used a damn stick. Week #2 got easier but even week three was hard on bike ..... which admittedly then was Suzuki GS1000G ... so knees had to bend a bit to get onto pegs.

I was tho managing by week #4 .. and if pegs had been further forward . as per cruiser, then it would have been easier by far.

Sounds like a great trip ..... and I hope you'll enjoy. Sorta deal I'd love to do myself given opportunity.:)

I currently ride an Aprilia Mille R , BMW F650 ( just got back from a tour to WI on it yesterday ) , MZ Skorpion Sport Cup , and a couple Honda Hawk GT's - my favorite bikes ever :D
If I'm touring , and it's legal to do so - I'll carry with a shoulder rig inside my Aerostich but if I'm sport riding , I don't carry due to not wanting an additional chunk of polymer /alloy/steel to break bones or create a wear point in a fall and I don't like the idea of carrying off my body lest I get into an accident and have a pistol unaccounted for somehow . There's also that issue of printing like mad from inside the Daineses !

2002 Honda VLX
Davies 22 magnum in a pocket holster, or my Springfield 1911 Ultra Compact in either a hip holster or a VMII.

Fella's;

Gee, bet nobody can guess what I ride! Since I'm left-handed, the tank-bag carry works very well for me. An easily removeable-from-the-bike bag is just a great plus. Works well on & off.

So I want to start carrying my Glock 30 on myself (not a saddlebag or tank bag). I have a Fobus paddle holster. Where is the best location to wear the holster so as to prevent further injury in case of a fall?

I considered a shoulder holster setup but I wear a heavy leather jacket when I ride and it would be very difficult to get a hold of my G30 if I needed too.

Thanks

Wherever it is - it could hurt you in a fall ... even a shoulder rig could be well unpleasant.

I reckon, go with normal ... I just keep my 3.30 OWB belt slide. If I used the Fobus (and have done in past) ... same deal.

IMO one place NOT to have it is SOB ... more potential in fall for severe spinal additional local trauma.

I've been carrying the Springfield Ultra Compact 45 acp on me. Long trips I'll pack a Model 29 as a backup inside the tank bag. I ride the Valk too.

I like the side pocket of my jacket - very handy, and perfect for not printing. It lies over fat too, so I'm not too worried about loss of fall protection. If you're going to carry full-size or suppressed, I would think a tank bag or left-side saddlebag or fairing compartment might make more sense.

The only time I carried on my bike (94 Honda CBR600F2) was on a solo trip out to the high desert. I stuck my Jammings J-22 into my tank bag and went on my merry way. Looking back, now that I've had some training, I might as well have had a Pez dispenser for all the good that nickel-plated paperweight would have done me.

The best part, though, was walking into an Indian casino with my tank bag in hand (pistol inside) and seeing the sign on the wall: Weapons prohibited. :uhoh: Oops.

I lost $20. :D

Anyway, it seems to me that you wouldn't really need a weapon while you're riding--after all, you're much more maneuverable than a car (well, some of you Hardly guys might not be :D ). It's only dismounted, and/or after a roadside breakdown (and we all know who that would be), that you might be susceptible to unwanted attention. (I would say you could just run away, but with the investments I've seen here...drop the kickstand and defend in place!)

So true. ;)

"Anyway, it seems to me that you wouldn't really need a weapon while you're riding--"

I'll bet Capt. America wished he'd had something, maybe even a Jennings!

:D Seriously, ride safe and free!:)

Vulcan 800 Classic

2002 Kawasaki Vulcan 800 Classic. I wish now I'd bought the 1500, but it was my first bike, and everybody told me I'd kill myself if I started with the 1500. They're probably right. :) Anyway, I don't carry now (no permit), but Monday (or perhaps Wednesday; I have to arrange against a trip for work), I'll be stopping by the county Sheriff's office to get printed, etc. A hundred and twenty-five bucks, annoyance, fingerprinting, and three background checks later, I'll be looking forward to a 1911 under my leather jacket.

ObGloat: First bike, I'd only ridden once before. Had it two years, a little over seven thousand miles, and I haven't even dropped the thing!

Mr. Pink: if you ever get rid of that Norton, I want first crack at it!
