Nearly, but no prize... yes the bore is SPOTLESS!!

The frame has been 'cut back' to expose the barrel threads, but this has been done 'by hand' after casting, wasnt cast in the NMA (NMN?) shape.

I may put another thread up here somewhere about my new baby.

Rare ASM Steel Frame Buffalo Model

Here's an Armi San Marco steel frame .44 Buffalo Model that has a really nice looking plum colored frame. It's marked BD which indicates that is was proofed in 1994. There's hardly any sign of wear on this gun.

Hey Arcticap, those Buffalo models are pretty awesome, aren't they? I have a Pietta one with stell frame. amazing shooter.

I asked the cabela's rep why they stopped importing them and they don't know why.

Marstar still sells the steel frame Pietta Buffalo Model in Canada.
But all that I can think of is that they want to make folks buy either the lesser expensive brass frames or the really expensive stainless ones.

Yeah, but besides being too expensive, the cost to have one sent to the US is absurd as well.

Why are there no 12" barrels for the 1858 around? They still import the brass framed Buffalo's, so why no 12" barrels on the market?

I can't find them, anyway.

SO out of curiosity what are the velocities of a specific load inthe 12 inch barreled guns vs. standard and 5.5?

Are the brass framed 12 inchers durable, accurate, and capable of the same loads as the steel in a Remington 1858-63 design?

DOes anyone make the carbine in a brass frame?

I don't have any info. for the 5.5", but when it comes to hunting the stainless frame Pietta 12" Buffalo is capable of hitting a lot harder than with the 8" barrel.

You can get 1000 + fps (313 ftlbs) with a 141 gr .454 ball and 35 gr of 777 in an 8 inch Pietta 1858 revolver and over 1200fps (450 ftlbs) if you go up to the 12 inch version. I have them both and that is what I have chronographed them on both my chrony and my hunting buddies as well.

If you wish to hunt big game you must only use 777 or Swiss any other powder just does not develop the pressures needed. Only use steel frame revolvers no brass models please as these cannot handle the high pressure created by these powders. I am getting 1250fps/450ftlbs with 37gr of 777, a wad and a .454 ball out of my 12 in stainless Pietta 1858. I get an honest 1000fps with 32gr of 777 and a 240 flat nosed conical which translates to over 530ftlbs of energy. This my friends is in the 41 magnum ballistic territory but with a bigger diameter and harder hitting projectile. I have been hunting with this gun for over a decade and have taken many deer and hogs out to 50 yards.

It's funny how advanced the 1863 double derringer is when compared to the '58 BP revolver! The bored through .46 caliber '58 is likewise advanced!

I never tried a 12" inch 1858... but, when loaded with swiss, it should be between 440/520ftlbs and 700ftlbs (as those are the numbers I reached with my 8" brass/rem and my 18" 1858 carbine respectively (.457 round ball over full chambers of swiss)).

nice shooting Iron MCgunner! the short Remmys on sale are tempting me, I'm thinking i need to save some cash and buy me a steel framed 58 Remmy! i mean i love my 8" Remington, but i would like a short barreled one. that way when I'm going to the fishing hole and have to walk past my neighbors i can stick it in my coat. (i never go to the woods or creek without a gun, it's good to be prepared)

They are nice for concealment, Levi. Not as accurate at longer distances, but better balanced and they do fit that coat pocket better.
