Posted to offer a point of view from the other side of the badge... apologies to those who have difficulty viewing video, at this point there's not much text available at the link.

There is more text at http://www.balloongoesup.com/blog/2012/02/three-tiers-of-police-citizen-encounters/ (which is where I found the link) for those whose connectivity limits access to video. The blogger here makes the point that as a law abiding citizen, our most likely armed encounter in the course of the day will be with a police officer who is going about his normal business. Having a basic understanding of what's involved in any level of contact with a LEO can help that contact go more smoothly.

Three Tiers of Police-Citizen Encounters
by Richard

The three tiers of police-citizen encounters are the subject of today’s training video. I cover consensual encounters, investigative detentions and arrests, breaking down some of the key elements to each.

Leave questions in the comment section and we will answer them the best we can. Keep in mind that your state laws and courts may deviate one way or another from the information presented here. You have to talk to your department’s legal advisor and local prosecutors to be certain of where you stand.

Hey, Lee--

I looked at the video and liked it. Not sure one has to listen past ther first 15 minutes or so (it gets repetitious); but that first part was helpful, IMHO.

Informative video Lee. That's the info we used to push open carry. In the beginning I had cops tell me they could stop anyone for any reason, that because I was carrying a gun I was obligated to identify myself, and other nonsense like that. We very quickly learned the law on Terry stops and were able to politely refuse their requests. Knowledge is power, whether you carry openly or concealed, don't talk your way into jail.
