Staves and bats of ash have been used for... ever. Rattan and bamboo splits easily...along the grain. Even hickory splits pretty easily with the grain. Ive split enough of each battoning with big blades. I've also used them as the mallet for that purpose. Performance properties aren't just how easily firewood splits.
