Grosse Ile, Michigan
just finished class at the new Thunder Ranch in Oregon
and we had a great time!

my cousin and i did the Concealed Carry course for three days
-prior we did a two day tutorial shooting hunting rifles.

we flew into Klamath Falls and drove our rental to Lakeview.
the town is very quaint and everyone is very friendly!
we shipped our rifles to Brad & Tanya at BJ's Mercantile
so we stopped in to visit and introduce ourselves; and pick
up a few essentials like dr pepper and jerky and ammo...

we stayed at the Hunter's Hot Spring Lodge which has a hot
spring and perpetual geyser on the property - the spring water
is used to make the pool a natural hottub!
though the hotel had it's heyday a few years ago,
it is still clean and more than adequate for a bunch of
gun nuts! they also have high speed internet access in some
rooms and in the lobby for those of us who just can't be out of touch
(Miss Ann on the desk understands only too well)

breakfast was at Jerry's (think classy diner, like the kind you WISH
was down the street from your house) where Cindy waited on us
every day and fixed our box lunch when we wanted them.
We had awesome burgers at the tavern on the other days for lunch.
We hear the pizza is good too.

TR-O is an all green facility so we shot lead free ammo both in our
rifles and our pistols. The rifle ammo was from TTI;
It was very accurate and
had the same ballistics as the previous hunting ammo i had used,
so no significant point of aim/point of impact was noted.
Students used the TTI and ICC ammo during the pistol course with
good effect and no problems.
The green ammo can be expensive BUT the vendors on the TR website
have their ammo specially priced for TR students and shipped direct.

Clint and Heidi Smith are the consumate hosts! We had dinner together as
a group during the first evening of the class--our dinner was at the
local mexican restaurant and Heidi tells me that she is going to rotate
the restaurant each month. The second evening the Smiths' hosted the
entire class in their home for an awesome home cooked bison
baked-spagetti dinner with all the trimmings. Their home is spectacular:
both inside with the many animal trophies and outside with the views of
the mountains!

Thunder Ranch Oregon - Part Two

Tracy and i arranged to shoot a two day hunting rifle tutorial with Clint
prior to the pistol class. We arrived into Lakeview having zeroed our
rifles at sea level with 180gn lead ammo and with a brand new scope
on mine. Now i have been to TR before, and i can personally attest that
Clint expects that the equipment you bring to class should run, period!
So in order to make sure we were 'on' we followed Brad's directions up
past TR on Hwy 140 to look for the local sheep and to zero our rifles.
No sheep (too foggy) but we ripped thru a couple boxes of ammo
and reverified our zeros.

Bright and early we arrived at TR with our rifles ready to go.
We shot for precision zero on the 100 yds targets (2.5 inches high
for me, dead on for Tracy) and that was quickly accomplished.
Then we headed out for the 'back 40' where Clint had set up
steel targets at 100, 200 and 300 yds. We first reconfirmed our zeros
at 100 and shot 200 in cadence. After lunch with Clint and Heidi at their home we headed back out to the back shot more at 200 yds and
then to 300 yards. Natural point of aim, and trigger control is exsquisitly
important at 300 yards! Just for a break, we climbed one of the several
mountains on the property and looked over the range deck, their home
and the mountains in the distance. After dinner we went home, soaked
in the hottub/pool/hot springs and crashed in bed! Day two was just as fun!
we started in the back, warmed up at 200 yards and shot 300 yards for
most of the morning in cadence. As a finale, we went 'rock hunting' out to
600 yards! really fun and really humbling!!! Then we climbed the other
mountain (on which we were shooting) to check our hits and to check out
the view! This curriculum was individual and precisely what we wanted.
The tutorial was great and much improved my long distance shooting.

Thunder Ranch Oregon - Part Three

After our rifle tutorial we participated in the second class at the
new Thunder Ranch Oregon: Concealed Carry Handgun.
There were nine students in class total. Besides us there was one other
student who had previously been to TR; the other students were
all experienced shooters but new to tactical and self defense shooting.
We shot the class from concealed with inside the waistband holsters.

The first morning was comprised of Clint's excellent lecture. He covered
tactics, safety and the nuances of concealed carry. His lecture is alone
worth the price of admission alone! The purpose of this class is not to be
exhaustive but rather to serve as the appropriate introduction to the
tactics and shooting of from concealed carry. Lunch was 'on our own' but
Miss Heidi had all the condiments and let us know that Jerry's would
prepare box lunches at a nominal cost.

The class shot exclusively green ammo and had very good results
with accuracy and functioning, from both ICC and TTI.

We went to the range after lunch and started with the basics:
engaging the targets at close quarters concentrating on marksmanship.
But that is not to say the class moved slowly; in fact, we moved along
at a rapid pace! We were shooting moving targets and shooting them while
we were moving ourselves by the end of the first afternoon!

For dinner the class met at the mexican restaurant. The food was
excellent and the students got to spend alot of time with Clint
and Heidi and get all those questions answered!

During the second day we continued to shoot movers and move while
we were shooting them. We also got to do grounded drills (my personal
favorite!). Clint points out that we have all been in fights and therein
ended up on the ground. As a result, we had a chance to fight from the
ground and to fight our way to our feet and then get back to cover!
Clint taught appropriate drawing from cover and we incorporated it into
our range drills.

As a break we went into the Terminator (the third generation multi-level
shoot house) for an introduction to the structure and to the tactics of
dwelling clearing. Clint emphasises that we learn tactics NOT to use them,
but ONLY in case we need to.

That was in preparation for our first run in the Terminator. The new terminator is even more challanging than the previous! All the rooms
on the ground floor are compressed while upstairs they are large. There
are lots of 180's and 270's and places where you go,
"oh, sh**! this is ugly!" The whole class learned alot, alot about the
advantages of an ensconced defense & danger of leaving it!

We had a break to make ourselves presentable then met at the Smiths
for dinner. They are very warm and welcoming! As i mentioned, their
home is spectacular with many hunting trophies and great views of the mountains.

During the final day of class we put together all of the techniques on the
range deck. The targets didn't seem to be standing still at all and we
were moving even more! We shot from retention (that's loud! even with muffs!)
We had a run thru the Terminator in the morning and again in the
afternoon.

Overall the class was excellent. We liked the new set up and the efficiency
of all the ranges on one range deck. We enjoyed the tutorial and especially
enjoyed (if that's the right word) Terminator3! The extra time spent with Clint and Heidi is outstanding! The hue and cry about the green ammo
is baloney! It worked great and wasn't expensive.

As clint would tell you, it's not about the hats and the shirts and the coffee
mugs, but just so you know, the new TR swag is from Cabela's and very
high quality.

As you may know, Clint has allowed Streamlight to put his logo
onto some of their lights.
Just for the record: he does not get any royalties or
money for endorsing Streamlight products -- you don't have to believe me,
ask Clint himself (if that's too intimidating, just look in the Streamlight
catalog it's there in his own words).

He has a package with two lights and a DVD of his low
light lecture. I didn't really NEED a new light, but once i learned Clint had
a lecture on DVD in the package, i had to have it! The DVD is great!
(I would have bought it without the lights!)

Really - nice job on the report. Wish we had these coming through more frequently.

Always good to know that if you do shell out hard earned money for a class that it meets with your expectations.

that "tactical napping" was video watching
very tactical!
as you can see from the attached photo
it was all serious!

i think that was 'Dogeball' or some other
uber-tactical flick...

as for Mrs. Doc
she is going for a distance rifle course in Texas in the summer
in prep for her Womens Only Pronghorn hunt in Wyoming in September
(her birthday present!)

she wants to do Ladies Handgun in June, but we need
a babysitter for the twins (they're six and in school and HARDLY ANY
work...)
ANY VOLUNTEERS?????

Pfffft, the boys. The solution is obvious--leave the boys with Uncle Kirk while Mrs. Doc stalks the big square states :D Think of the places they will go--Starbuck's, the Post Office, court, county jail, bail bonds offices, shooting ranges, gun stores, sorority parties, sushi bars, and, um, er, another type of bar that Art's Grandmother would not approve of. Think of all the things that they will learn. :uhoh:

O.K., maybe not.

I can't speak for Doc and the boys... but I'd be up for a weekend with Uncle Kirk...

Harry's Chocolate Shop, Brothers, Sgt. Preston's, and Chances Are here we come!

I might still know a Pi Phi or two as well.... :D

Excellent write-up. Thank you for posting about your experience there. It makes me want to sign up today! :)

Great write-up, I was there the class before you in class#1 Urban Rifle and had a great time. I alredy have two more classes booked, one later this year and one next year. Clint and Heidi really do a fine job.

tom:
count me in!!!

free:

did you do UR or the 'New' Urban Precision Rifle?
had you shot the UR course in Texas? if so, how did it compare in
Oregon?

oh yeah, and, is that house incredible or what!?!?!?!?!

DOC

it was the basic urban rifle, I had been to Texas TR a couple times before but not for a rifle class. I liked both the Texas school and Oregon, I would be hard pressed to say which one I liked best.

Thanks for the write-up, Oregon's not too far from Hawaii, sounds like it would be worth my while to visit Thunder Ranch.
