Bear rifle or "Tactical Lever Rifle"?

Marlin 1895 STP LTD 45/70

My shoulder hurts just thinking about it!!

It's going to be a fun little powerhouse. I'll take it for a spin this weekend.

It's the "Trapper" model 45/70

I have a box of Winchester XTP 325gr to try in it.

How is the muzzle blast on that bad boy?

Very nice compact powerhouse. :)

I haven't fired it yet. But I have fired an 18 incher, and while the blast and recoil will be considerable, its nothing light a light 300 magnum. At least to me anyway.

For targets and fun shooting, some "cowboy" loads will be a lot of fun.

.45-70 can be fun offhand. Just see that your sight-in session is short and well-padded, and the gun should actually be fun.

Those are some fancy sights. Any reason you did not go for a peep/ghost ring /aperture sights? Maybe you have young eyes; I can't work regular rifle sights anymore.

Those are what came on it.

They are faster and easier to aquire than you might think. The rear dots glow BRIGHT green, and the front glows BRIGHT red. The hood comes off the front sight.

A rear peep would be pretty neat with the red front sight, though.

I love marlin lever guns. I have a 39a, 32, 357 and 44 mag and also a 336 in 30-30. I wish I had my 45/70 back. That was a brute of a round. I used the 44 mag to kill a deer last season. I was impressed. So was the deer.

Those are nice rifles Zombie. I sure hope Marlin survives the move and is up and running quickly.

With loads appropriate for the Marlins, it'll exceed the .300 mags in recoil from that little rifle. In a 7 pound rifle, a .300 mag pushing a 180 at 3,100 will be right around 40 ft/lbs of free recoil. From that tiny Marlin, a stout load will best that. My 405 gr. handloads at 2,015 FPS calculate 47 ft/lbs @ 20 FPS from my 7 pound standard 1895.
