I have been shooting the heck out of my 6.5 little lapua lately. This is a fine cartridge for 1200 yards and in, but I am thinking of something with a little more legs. I have the room to shoot to about 1800 yards, and have a few extra 30 cal blanks sitting around. My smith already has a 300 win mag reamer.
Here's the question. Should I stick with 30 cal or step up to something like a 7 mag? I know people have been using the 300 win mag forever, but the ultra high bc 7mm bullets out today are sure tempting.
I would love to here from anyone with long range experience on either of these cartridges.

The very large variety of superb .30 caliber bullets should help you decide.

7 saum/7 wsm or 6.5x284.. 300wm with 208gr amax is a heavy hitter on the shoulder..

i agree on the recoil consideration, but I will have a suppressor in the next year or so. also barrel life is not in my equation, because I have the 6.5 little lapua for shooting inside 1200.
the main reason i am considering the 300 win mag is because of the extra barrels and not having to buy a reamer. there is almost too many choices for the long range shooter these days with all these bullets with g7 bc's over .3.

I would take a gander over at longrangehunting.com alot of those boys like to reach out to crazy distances in all intentions of making humane shots.

now a 338 lapua or similar might be something, but I don't really want the hassle of having to buy 2 suppressors. That is the only reason to looking past the 338's. I buy all my actions from stiller and he makes actions for everything from 22lr to 408 cheytac's. Sure is nice having a premium action builder as a neighbor.

I have also ruled out the 6.5-284 because I don't believe the extra 250 fps I would get over my 6.5x47 is worth the trouble.

surely, someone has a bit of experience with the win mag or 7mm at plus 1400 yards.

Working on it...but haven't found a place to shoot it that far...it will be sub-sonic so imagine accuracy will begin to suffer. The .300RUM or .30-378 Weatherby is about as "good" as you can get in 30cal, otherwise .338LM is your cartridge.

:)

I just bought a bunch of .300 WM brass on the cheap. Unti now, I have been shooting relatively inexpensive factory loads through my BAR in .300, but I want to reload. I started looking at 190-220 grain bullets and they have some fantastic high-BC loads now. I am tempted to get a true precision rifle in .300. I like the .338 Lapua but brass costs much, much more and bullets are 40-60 percent more expensive than the high performance .308 bullets. I would love to know what you decided to do, because although I think I will get a 6.5 rifle before I get a precison .300, the .308 bullets seem to be coming into their own.

After talking to a few other ukd shooters around here, I have started to build up a tubegun in 7wsm/223ai. The wsm will probably have a 28 in barrel, and the 223ai will be somewhere around 20 inches. The action will be glued into a lefty css rts stock. the 7 will feed from modified 308 ai mags, and the 223 will feed from the new 223 ai mags. Both of which will be fitted to use my 30 cal. can.
I am doing it this way because my fixed costs will be down. Just have to buy one action with two bolts, one stock, trigger, scope, rings, etc.
Due to the head/scope position of the css stocks, I think I will finally be able to run a schmidt bender with a lefty bolt. So that is my answer to my next rifle. Push the 7wsm with 175-180 grain bullets from sierra or berger, and it should have a bit more legs than my 6.5x47 lapua. And pushing the 75 amax with the 223 ai should be a fun little rifle.

Thanks for the suggestions guys.

Zak has been a big help already, and is one of the guys who helped me decide on the 7wsm.

I ended up cutting my 6.5x47 down to 22 inches, and have yet to see a disadvantage. So I figured there would be little to gain with a long overly heavy barrel in 223ai. My ar15 carries well out to about 800. The ai will be shooting a better b.c. bullet (75 or 80 amax) and more capacity (ackley improved), this should get me to the 1k mark no problem. The 7wsm will have the longer barrel, because I want to squeeze every last fps out of it. Needs to make the mile mark down here in West Texas, and the wsm will need all the help it can get.

Sorry guys, no pics just yet. Still in the gathering parts phase. All I can give you now is a pic of the x47 cut down to 22, and wearing its new Vortex Razor. Have taken two pigs so far. One at 490, and the other at 100ish. Turns out the x47 can do more than hunt steel.

And another pic of the 1200 yard field. Rifle is wearing a backup falcon menace, because I broke my premier reticles heritage. I am so glad I got my Razor now.

Good luck on your new rig.
I like playing the LR game too:D
I use 7mm Dakota and a 338 Lapua Improved (338AX) for my longer shots.
Also use the 7mm SAUM, 6.5WSM, and 6.5-284 too for sure.
Sounds like you are doing good, keep up the good work.
Mine are all single-shot specialty pistols, so if, I can do it you should have no problems:)

As the guy said in an old, old, humor piece in Gun Digest, he could cut his barrel off to 18" and not SEE a difference, either. I figure the free extra velocity is worth the length. But I do not traipse around in the woods with mine, either.

it stopped dialing elevation accurately. my elevation would change by as much as a couple mils between going down to my hundred yard zero back to 1k. I repeated this several times and came up with new dope every time. Dialed down to my hundred yard zero and used my reticle, and all of a sudden I was back on track. Pretty amazing, so I checked to make sure my knobs were tight. They were as tight as ever.

I ended up sending the scope back to Premier, they had it one day and was back to me within a couple days. They said nothing was wrong with it, and I should just keep shooting it as was. The scope went back to vendor shortly thereafter.

Sucks too, because I loved that scope. But with service like that, I will never own another Premier reticles product again.
