Today I enjoyed the outdoors. I chose to carry......

20211104_172306.jpg ....and here is my office with a broken tie rod end.....
My trusty LCP iwb the whole time. The night I broke the tie rod end was a good lesson in why I carry at all times...
I was a able to locate the new part. But it was 2½hrs away at Clinton, Illinois. I was already 40 minutes from home, so Mrs farmer picked me up, and we headed to Clinton got my part, ate supper, and arrived back home around midnight.
You never know what the day may bring. When I left home that morning. I wasn't expecting to be traveling on the interstate late that night.

Bet it didn't take you long to figure out what went wrong there

I'm out enjoying the day as usual.
Today, however, the sheriff's dept is patrolling my area for an 'armed and dangerous'. A sheriff's dept post on fb suggests to stay inside and lock doors.
. I'm not sure what's up, but I upgraded my carry gun from lcp to the venerable sr9c for the time being, at least.

So today I chose to carry my sr9c and spare 10rd mag. 20211112_100046.jpg

Had a minor adventure a few Fridays ago.
Managed to get my work truck real stuck at 4:15 on a Friday. No radio signal. No cell service. Alone. Tire chains didn’t work. Digging didn’t work. Finally abandoned ship at 5:15 to hike cross country to where I knew I’d find shelter. Fortunately I got to a ridge top and got a call to my friend and coworker who came and got me.

No gun due to being on the clock. Just a Spyderco Yojumbo in the pocket. Hiked about a mile cross country over very steep and rough terrain to a gravel road I know, then another mile in the dark to a meeting point. Friend found me at a road intersection sitting under a lit sign. LOL! I actually enjoyed it, though the woods are a different animal in the dark with mountain lions running around.

Today I took my new G20 for its first outing. The wife and one of the dogs came too. :D

After double checking some maps to make sure the route wasn't on private property, we set out on a much straighter and shorter way to a spot we'd visit before. Looking back down on the canyon really is a pleasant view. And only 750' of elevation gain.
IMG_20211114_123112347_HDR.jpg

From there we dropped over the ridge behind us, into semi forested hilly bowl. Nice views all around really. I've only been here once or twice before, but if you've watched this thread progress, you've probably seen it before.
IMG_20211114_123332522_HDR.jpg

The Gen 4 G20 is loaded with Buffalo Bore 190gr mono solids, but the backup mag has my partially tested 180gr FMJ-FN in it. The blade is my trusty Fallkniven A1, which is often used for trail maintenance, and rarely anything much more unless we're camping. But would probably be helpful if I found myself wearing a mountain lion at some point.
IMG_20211114_123602599_HDR.jpg

So we did pass some hunters coming down as we were on our way up. They'd been successful, which seemed quite lucky considering there's no water source that I know of up here at this time of year. It didn't take long to find the carcass sitting down in a shady draw. Though I know there's a high flat point on the ridge across the bowl, which would provide good coverage of much of the terrain, including this spot. It looked like a good shot at a downward angle, and I suspect (though I didn't investigate) hit the heart.
IMG_20211114_130510440.jpg

I was also pretty amazed with all the bear scat around the place. There were tracks about too, but none good enough to take pictures of. None of the scat appeared to be particularly fresh, but clearly atleast one bear had been munching up all the Kinnikinnick berries and whatever else was growing in the draws up here earlier in the year.
IMG_20211114_130646821_HDR.jpg

The dog was pretty sure we weren't alone, but the vegetation was too dry to do any appreciable sneaking about and check. Maybe after a couple light dustings of snow I'll go alone and try again.
IMG_20211114_133512928_HDR.jpg

But there's certainly some nice country to explore in more detail now that I've found an easier and more straightforward way to access it. Plus the drive isn't all that far.

The G20 and I will be back here soon. Possibly around Thanksgiving. :)

After doing some chronograph testing late this morning, I headed up to some higher country for a wander. Found the road had been reopened, and modified my plan just a little. I decided to walk a circuit I've done a few times before, and see if I could find some wildlife.

The little pond being full was a good sign. And behind it I started seeing a lot of deer tracks running up and down the draw.
IMG_20211121_121617434_HDR.jpg

Unfortunately, I had the wind behind me, and I ended up bumping some does on the far side of the Aspen Grove.
IMG_20211121_123929250.jpg

I cut up onto the ridge to the left, to see if I could get eyes back on them, and maybe get my scent blowing slightly ahead of them (the draw curves to the left) and then head them off.
IMG_20211121_124907772.jpg

Beautiful views up there.
IMG_20211121_125217162_HDR.jpg

I worked along the ridge to try and cut them off. The plan worked, but the wind has changed. I got the binoculars on them, but before I could make camera phone lens and the binocular connect correctly, they'd had enough and took off over the far ridge. Some faster than others.
IMG_20211121_132222593_HDR.jpg

Next time I'll reverse the loop as the wind seems pretty consistent. But after reaching the point where the ridge, the draw, and an old logging road connect, I bumped a young Buck, and decided to take a break.
IMG_20211121_135716366_HDR.jpg

I took the new G20, the older Fallkniven A1, and a set of Nikon Monarchs. Along with a whole bunch of just-in-case stuff, some water and food.
IMG_20211121_134453302_HDR.jpg

There's some thick forest on the far side of the ridge, but the old logging road is mostly still clear. Except for patches of blow down. This is an area that needs more exploring.
IMG_20211121_142003999_HDR.jpg

Once that logging road ended, I took the easy way back down.
IMG_20211121_150029268_HDR.jpg

But I did stop along the way to finally find a spring I'd seen on the map. It appears to have been improved at some point. Which is nice to know.
IMG_20211121_151214009_HDR.jpg

I'll be back to this spot, and do it in reverse so the wind doesn't blow my cover. :D

A few pictures from the last 16 days of whitetail huntin' in northern Minnesota...

And a couple of rubs I ran across...

Never did find the beast making these rubs and scrapes, our camp only got one for four tags.
Our hunting is nothing like one would see on TV.

It is a sporterized Model 1917 Remington with Redfield peep sights that my Dad competed with in the early 1960's.

Yeah, we always have fun, even though we are getting older...two faithful generations now, going on three plus, I'm not in the younger group.;)

Our celebratory campfire from last night as we pulled out this morning due to burn-out and 30 mph winds with snow.:( Been there, done that...

Not a small fire. That's a four foot long log burning ...and a few brews were consumed.:)

Having had a streak of bad luck during our firearms season, I took a hike hoping to stumble into a wounded or dead buck that I had an encounter with the previous day.
Unfortunately I didn't find the buck, but I had an enjoyable hike regardless of the circumstances. 20211122_150331.jpg Bluebird skies, Temps in the low 40s.
20211122_145135.jpg
Our area is loaded with deer. Perhaps you can see some at the treeline. I think there were seven.
20211122_143014.jpg
I chose to carry my ruger American ranch in 7.62x39. It has become my go-to woods rifle. I thought later that for what I was doing, my scoped 22 rifle might have been better for a precise coupe de grace. But it didn't matter. I found no sign of the wounded buck.
20211122_151354.jpg
It has become apparent to me that wounded deer seem to want to be near the water. 20211122_152439.jpg I searched the riverbank on our property and beyond for the wounded buck. I did find remains....but not from mine.
20211122_161731.jpg
I struggled up the steep leaf-covered bluff out of the bottom and up to my overlook camp.
I dug around into my Honda saddlebags and found something to drink before I headed home. 20211122_162235.jpg
The paint was partially worn off the can....but it drank just fine!

"Liking" it wasn't enough. I've thought about it repeatedly since you posted it, so I have to tell you how much I enjoy that view from your office. Great picture! I'm sure I wouldn't be envious of your daily hard work, but I am envious of that view . :D

Unlike this gun, my Walther P99 AS has just the trigger paddle (mag.) release.

The "DE" is for the German guns, with the small "antler" image or such designating Ulm Germany for the proof firing.
Weird timing: my wife and I rode on a train Through Ulm, months Before I knew that I would buy a P99 AS, as I couldn't quite get used to the HK USP's DA, nor the HK P30 series' DA trigger pulls.

I would trade a few days in "my office"...... IMG_20210819_135946.jpg .... for one of those beautiful mountain hikes that you go on!
Especially if there was a trout stream along the way!
Of course this flatlander would need an 0² bottle.
