Today I enjoyed the outdoors. I chose to carry......

Yesterday was a day spend alone on the hunting property. I checked all the cameras, put out a new one, and did some metal detecting. It turned out to be the day of the turtle. I saw four different box turtles throughout the days activities.

And the old model 10 was along for the ride.

The metal detecting did not turn up anything too remarkable. I did find the spent 30 Remington AR case I had fired last season taking my buck. I found a very old buck shot pellet, based on the white coating of lead oxide,. A bunch of random iron/steel mostly wire and nails and a very large monkey wrench that was over a foot deep. I don't think it is restorable but I am hoping a good pressure wash and maybe a trip in the Evaporust will at least let me ID the specific make and model.

It was a beautiful day to be out in the woods in middle TN.

My dad told me about finding a wrench like that when he was a boy walking home from his one-room Schoolhouse about '42. He proudly handed it to my grandpa who quickly looked it over, front and back then threw it overhand out into the pasture. "There's a reason you found that". "They weren't any good when they were new!"

I hope all of you were able to get outdoors and enjoy the holiday weekend.
I was able to go to 2 parks with my best girl.
On Sunday we went to Hartman Creek State Park. Hiked about 3 miles of trails. Saw lots of birds, turtles, and fish in the clear lakes.
One common water snake went across our path.

On Monday Mrs WisBorn and I drove the auto trail at Sandhill Wildlife Area. The park is open prairies, marshes, reservoirs, and woods. The highlight was seeing 8 trumpeter swans. It was great weather and just nice to enjoy the outdoors.

I carried my 442 this weekend. One of the three pictured slips into my pocket each day. The 442 is my favorite, the LCPII of course is the handiest/smallest. The Kimber works in my cargo pants but a little big for most of my shorts.

I want to thank all of the members who lost someone in their family or someone that was close to them while serving their country! Monday I stopped by a local cemetery to pray and thank those who gave their life so we can enjoy ours.....

Into "The Park" before the 9am start of timed-entry-permits. It was due to start raining about 1pm.

We chose the Deer Mountain trail, which I've avoided up to now either because of wind, or rather hot and sunny conditions. But today seemed perfect for it.

A few views from the parking area and up.

The top was in the clouds.

Though this chipmunk wasn't too close, we actually got mobbed by half a dozen of them pretty quickly. It's a popular trail and I guess they get fed regularly despite the rules.

Spring has reached up to at least 10,000'.

Took the G20 and some 180gr FMJ at 1250fps or there abouts.

Now we did see a dead deer near the road on the way in. On the way out, a rather large Turkey Vulture was dining on it. Unfortunately it flew off before we could get an pictures. Impressive bird and though.

Seven Bridges Trail To Loud's Cabin.

Started at the red dot (I almost always start at the Red dot) 10 miles round trip

20230604_124054.jpg

Stick,Tilley, Glock and Knife. FWIW I was about halfway between the yellow and blue dots. Right between North Cheyenne Cañon and Bear Creek when I took that.
20230604_134037.jpg

This is pretty close to the yellow dot it's about 2.5 miles from the red dot and 3 miles from the blue dot.

Blue dot. Loud's Cabin Right at the base of Mount Garfield. I considered climbing it but all I would have seen from the top would be clouds.

Bear Creek Cañon. Fog rolling in

Rain in Bear Creek Cañon.

BTW When they say a Tilley hat is water proof, they mean you can put it in the washing machine and it won't ruin it. They don't mean it will keep your head dry

I try to post here anytime I have anything to add. Sometimes it's pretty lame.

I'm at work today, but playing the waiting game between loads of crop protection spray.

Today I chose to bring my Hatsun 95 .22 pellet rifle along for the day.
20230610_103739.jpg I estimate that I fired around 50 shots tuning my scope to a new tin of ammo.
I backed the truck down this dusty gravel road for over ¾ of a mile, if that tells you how remote we are here today. I was going to be overloaded on two bridges if I had driven in. Since I backed in, I was only over on one. :uhoh:. No place to turn around without tromping crops.:cuss:

This stuff shoots great! Thumbnail sized groups at 15 steps using the volvo fender as a rest. 20230610_104316.jpg
I may drag it out again before the day is over.
There are some butterflies flittering around in the adjacent road ditch that seem to be mocking my abilities :scrutiny:.

Nice air rifle. I haven't had one since I was a boy in the 70's and I know they've come a long way. I've never done any farming or truck driving so both look glamourous to me but I imagine there's no harder work than farming. Not to mention I would be missing few fingers if I worked around farm machinery! lol

It's a pretty good gig. I still have all my fingers.

Another pleasant overcast day. Perfect for hiking this scenic trail.

IMG_20230611_095045308_HDR.jpg

The small lake at the top was full.
IMG_20230611_101658275_HDR.jpg

Though we were sharing the scenery with others.
IMG_20230611_105656475_HDR.jpg

Awesome rock formations in this area.
IMG_20230611_105810081_HDR.jpg

On the way back down we stopped at a popular feature to take advantage of the fact that no one else was there.
IMG_20230611_112434438_HDR.jpg
IMG_20230611_112537228_HDR.jpg

And snapped a quick pic looking back the other way from halfway up.
IMG_20230611_113026702.jpg

The 1,200' descent was easier than the other way, and no less stunning.
IMG_20230611_115033400_HDR.jpg

And I had the opportunity to get off the trail far enough for a discrete gun pic.
