OK, so the subject line is my take on it.

It DID catch my attention as an interesting plot device on tonight's CSI. A rape victim wanted to buy a gun for protection, but before the victim-disarmament--er, waiting--period was up, she was abducted and killed. :cuss:

Edited too ficks a speling missteak.

yeah i saw that.

is that chimera condition a real thing? it would be pretty cool to have two sets of dna.

and what was with that brown hair chick getting busted for dwi? it seemed like a time killer to me.

and to keep it gun related, i agree that not having a waiting period would have saved her plus it would have eliminated a serial rapist/killer.

The DWI bust was related to the previous scene where she congratulates a co-worker for an "almost promotion" to a job she applied and lobbied for. The inference is that after she congratulated him she went out and got drunk. I'm not sure the cell phone call in which the vic is overheard complaining about the waiting period to purchase a handgun was an intentional protest against the waiting period. At least it's better than the inference that would have appeared on Law and Order. It's interesting to see the different approaches taken by CBS/Bellisarius Productions (JAG/NCIS) as opposed to NBC/Wolf (Law and Order) etc. CBS appears to have a few shows that are pro-military and at least not anti-gun.

Dunno about the chimera condition, but I kinda think they made that up. That would be rather interesting if it really did exist, though.

The "brown hair chick" is Sara Sidle (played by Jorja Fox). There've been a few episodes where it was hinted that she had a drinking problem (including in the repeat episode that ran at 8, just before the season finale). I presume it's a follow-up to the "character development" thread that runs through the series.

And to keep it gun related: I wonder if she'll be allowed to keep carrying her gun after that?

harpethriver, good point. Ya gotta wonder if there's something decent going on in CBS's entertainment division. (The news division is a lost cause, though.)

Technical note: CSI is produced by Jerry Bruckheimer's company, not Bellisarius.

I think there's some fact to the condition in this...I don't know if it's actually "called" chimera, but the name seems to fit in some ways...and it certainly sounds btter than something with 20 syllables like some other conditions...

Generally speaking, I've thought of, "CSI" as another anti-gun cop show. Las Vegas is one of the few cities in Nevada to have gun registration. They also evidently have a waiting period!

Sarah Sidle sure isn't the first cop to be caught drunk. I hope she works out her problems and avoids alcoholism. And I hope Grissom and she get along well, and that Catherine (the blonde chick played by Marg Helgenberger) has a happier life and reconciles with her dad, who seems to be a casino owner with a potential morals problem. (I only occasionally get to see the program, but do prefer it to the Miami version. I never could stand David Caruso.)

Lone Star

Somebody had to stick the 72 hour waiting period comment in on purpose. It had no revelency to the plot. We have a mole in CSI Las Vegas.

I'm with you Lone Star, Carouso was lousey on NYPD Blue and hasn't gotten any better. He thought his didn't stink but I think he found out better.

It does show the woman was stupid anyway. Las Vegas has a 3 day waiting period IF you don't have a "blue card" which shows you've bought a gun before. It's only in the city - drive out to Henderson and buy your gun, no waiting period. Guess they forgot to put that in the show. :p

LV does have handgun registration, and is probably not as gun friendly as people think. They make sure that getting a CCW is a very frustrating experience, and thay made me wait more then the 120 days the law allows for them to get me the permit.

I believe that technical term is "tetragametic chimera." There are supposedly only 30 documented cases of it.

I picked up on the victim having to wait to get a gun immediately. I told my wife that got her killed; she disagreed. I said the gal was a fighter in both instances so if she had had some equalizing, i.e. a gun, she would have survived. I do thing there should have been more a sense of remorse of the CSI team and police. The victim was all over it: fighting back, surviving, identifying the rapist/murderer; they dropped the ball.

In medicine, a person who is composed of two genetically distinct types of cells is called a chimera. This may be due to the fusion of two embryos at a very early (blastula) stage. More commonly today, the formation of a chimera is due to transplantation. When bone marrow from one person is used to reconstitute the bone marrow of an irradiated recipient, the recipient becomes a chimera. Here in gene therapy, the chimera is a molecule that does not exist in nature, that is part DNA, part RNA, a molecule of incongruous parts, the chimeraplast.

Cool.

One other item regarding the rape victim that I found interesting. She was desperate to get the gun, even begging Catherine (Marg Helgenberger's character) several times for help and info on where she could get one (she was finally abducted after trying--and failing--to buy one at a pawn shop). Using the purchase info that others have posted here, we're left with two possible conclusions regarding Catherine's attitude towards letting the rabble have guns:
1) She thinks that the "little people" should never have them, or
2) The writers just didn't know and so didn't have Catherine help the victim (either that, or it would have screwed up the plot and made it more difficult to "kill" the victim).

another48hrs, isn't Nye county where the aliens land to talk to Art Bell?

Daniel, thanks for the correct phrase. A google search turns up a lot of hits on it, including this interesting story:

Guns save lives! :banghead:

Every once in a while Hollywood lets something slip through. I am sure whoever made the mistake of letting this slip through will disapear forever.

I think so, I've only heard his radio show once and even then it was in my friend's friend's creepy house. Let's just say the radio was made with tin foil and silverware and was probably ran by ant power. I doubt the aliens go just to talk to Art Bell I think they go there for somethingelse. :D

Nye County is the place Art Bell is from. I saw that CSI episode, too. My first handgun purchase was in Las Vegas, and if I had known I could have gotten it in Henderson without the 3 day wait, I would have. I've since relocated to the "Gun-Friendly" state of Utah. I just wish my CCW permit was recognized in the Silver State when I go back to visit family.

BTW, wasn't "Chimera" also the name of the virus in "Mission Impossible 2"?

I just wish my CCW permit was recognized in the Silver State when I go back to visit family.

There's a lot of stuff we need to get changed here, so I joined the group that seems to get the most done, the Nevada Rifle & Pistol Assn. They 've gotten some things changed, like the old two gun limit on CCW's, and I know reciprocity is high on their list. Hopefully "we" can make some things happen.

My brother just moved to Lost Wages. I'll probably be visiting him for his birthday (July 4th). He hasn't been there long enough to establish residency.
Is there a limit as to how many guns he can have on his CCW? or was that eliminated?

The limit was eliminated, he can have as many as he wants on the permit. But, each gun must be listed and you must qualify with each one too.

When you first arrive, the law says handguns must be registered at a police station within 24 hours. When you do that you get a "blue card" for each gun. He can then take that blue card to a gun store, and when he wants to buy a gun he can skip the 3 day waiting period by having that and answering "Yes" to the question of "Have you lived here 90 days". That's what I did and never did have a waiting period.

followup info on CSI's creator/producer

Hmm, here's something interesting about CSI's creator & producer, Jerry Bruckheimer. He has his own skeet range on his farm in Kentucky. So, now we know that he's not deathly afraid of guns, although it is a far cry from saying he's pro-2A. (How many Hollywood types can we all name who think it's fine if they have guns but the little people--you and me, the people who support their work--can't.)

Then again, Bruckheimer doesn't appear to be the typical limpwristed Hollywood leftist, as he has been known to produce programs that do not follow the normal Hollywood idea of the military (i.e., many Hollywood leftists can't stand to see the military portrayed honorably, yet Bruckheimer did just that in Black Hawk Down and some documentary stuff he did).

And, for those who're interested in knowing, my source for the skeet range info is the May 31, 2004 issue of BusinessWeek magazine, in a little sidebar in an article about Bruckheimer.
