Me and my 1 year old grandson, Wade. Quite the man about camp.......
Chip_N_Grandson,_target_practise,_Kiwalik_River_August_2018.jpg
He loves hunting, guns, boats and placing food every where it can be fit, thrown or squeezed.
I figured to support those habits, so he should go hunting with me.

The lady at the counter said if he cant look over the counter , he cant get a Moose permit ,so I bought him a beer.

A Rootbeer

Hes got shooting down, though by his second birthday he might end up with a sharp knife and a lighter....in November...

The rifle is a 'Crickett Precision', in .22S L and LR...... comes complete with possibly the worlds worst trigger ( I smooth'd that up with a nailfile), Match grade air gauged generic maker bull barrel, muzzle brake, funydinkerwacker Bipod, mildot AIM 3 power scope, and Arctic Warfare ripp'doff and miniaturized adjustable stock.

It hits the 8 inch steel ringer across the river, every time. Sometimes the kid hits it too

Since he cant get the Moose tag, I guess Ill have to do the shooting and let him drive, so he got a crash course on open Ocean boating with some river navigation and boat driving.......

The kid also throws rocks with eye popping (OUCH!!) precision, and splits wood like he's had a full former life as a lumber jack. Chops kindling AND Unsticks that hatchet like a pro! No blood sofar...

I cant wait untill he speaks in sentences ; when hes up and tumbles staggeringly over the Tundra to our tent while Im making morning coffee, its a soft ''Gook!" and where ever he's pointing, there is, indeed, something..........Seagulls, Geese, Ravens, Muskox, Dying Salmon in the river, and , of course, butterflys.......
hunting.jpg
Im teaching him how to say ''Caribou'', 'Moose ', ' Bear ', and "What the hell is that, Tata??!!??''

Since hes very grown up for his age, we let him smoke
Iri,_Wade,_Kiwalik.jpg

fish with the ladys. Whitefish and Salmon , and he's here with his mom.

Its been awhile since my 7 kids were that small in the tents........Grand kids......

My god man. You start em early up there in Alaska. Handsome young man. Congratulations. Handsome rifle your holding there too in the top pic.

I actually paid extra for the crappy trigger I fear :D

The M1a is all Nat Mat, and with PMC 'Bronze' 150's, I can ring the 8inch gong at 300 yards all the do da day. Ive been trying to work out to 500 with open sights before I top it with a scope, and use it for Fur. Been burning 40 rounds a day doing so.
I used it fopr Brown Bear hunting this Spring, and had the lip on one mag cracked and did a mag dump on me, out the top whilst actually shooting at the Bear! The peeps are not my familiar V and post like my Mosin's had, and I needed practise. A chunk of wood thrown in the river and moveing at current speed away had me working on moving shots and at ranges a Wolf would work out to, if walking, so Im getting better.
Intill Im deadly with it, The M-39 SAKO Ive gotten is still me ''go to'' rifle around here.

We feel and have found first hand that if were around such things as firearms, sharp objects, high tempertures and large bodys of water, its best to show the kids what they are for, how to use them properly and what dangers to look out for. They also getto participate inthe proper and right way to use such items. It also takes away the curiosity, so they dont shoot/cut/ burn/drowned having a look see while were not looking.

my 24 year old and 16 year old daughters were all set to stick pigs whilst in Hawaii, but were ran off the island they were on by record rains and again from the next island they went to, (8 more times) when a volcano erupted and burned 36 houses 3 blocks away...... not a 'vacation' but real life Adventure......

Reminds me a favorite quote from a favorite movie.....
""Repo Man dosent spend his life staying OUT of dangerous situations, Repo Man spends his life getting INTO Dangerous situations!''-- Harry Straton

I spent my teen years in the Flathead working sesonal jobs with beef and steady work with milkfarms....4 am and silage on the menue......gates to open and water troughs to clear of ice......

I eat Beef because I HATE Cows.... :D

But, I dont dislike the flavor, just the ways and means of an animal.
Picking Cherries, shaping Xmas trees, clearing ditches, chucking rocks into a truck as we walked along, that stuff I could handle...
Growing up amongst the fields and streams, hunting and fishing was always at hand before and after, sometimes during work......gave me a good grip on the reality of working for myself and when I visited up this way at 19, I didnt see need to go back..

You have a mount in mind?
Edit to ask how you like the German surplus gear?

I was actually thinking about one I can see my iron sights through.

Reccomendations? I have a Primary arms ACSS and I was offerd a Ful;ton mount, but he said it had to be dismounted to use the irons, so I declined.

"'Bustascope'' is common swear word up this way, though I do see some old Leupods around.

Springfield Armory makes a removable, see through mount that gives you just enough clearance not to need a cheek riser.

I like milsurp much better than bright and light comercial stuff.
Basicly I get the German stuff, its in a color (flec cammo) that matches the Tundra and is water proof, not just resistant and its dirt cheap.
The Germans still rubberize alot of ther wet gear and thats a lot better than water repelllent nylon, and Ill carry the extra pound. Same for ponchos, pouches and packs.

Im cheap but I do buy quality, and looks are secondary to dry and warm.

Grandkids are neat. Especially when they take to the woods with Grandpa. You're sure starting him out right, before Grandma gets a chance to complain.

My granddaughter is 12 and has a couple of deer to her credit but my 5 yo grandson is a holy terror. I call him the Tasmanian Devil like the one in the old cartoons.

The 'real' LBZ starts Tuesdays, last night was to 'prime' the seasons string, 26 inna row.

Sunday before last, we won our 3rd Emmy, and our 100th episode is on January1st, something unheard of in the ''Biz'', but so is the term ''Unscripted Docuseries"...........LOL!! There is no reality , in reality TV. National Geographic has dumped all but LBZ and Wicked Tuna (the reruns of AK Troopers/Port Protection/Live Free or Die/Ledgend of Mick Dodge/etc will continue as scheduled) because were the only two unscripted, undirected shows on. ''Release the Tunas!'' "Cue the Caribou and tell he Salmon to hit the net!!" never happend...and never will.........LOL!!!

Great post family is one of the most important things in life. I don't often show my girlfriend posts from the forum. I did show her this one and she loved it. Cute grandkid, I hope you get to enjoy alot of time with him and teach him your ways.

CariBou,
You have a ton of fans on THR and on LBZ. glad to hear yall won an emmy!! You deserve it. Keep up the posts about what you do we really enjoy them. Thanks for the tip about german rubberized gear. are you getting it thru Sportsman guide??They seem to have lots of surplus military gear.
Sure is a cute Grandson you got there!!

Bull

Man, I've bought a ton of stuff from Sportsman's Guide. Have a pair of Russian military jack boots I thought would make good motorcycle boots. They were 20 bucks. But, they look too good to ride in, so I use 'em for dress. Seriously, I wear 'em to church, wore 'em to my daughters wedding.

I had a rubberized military rain poncho years ago I absolutely LOVED for hunting ducks in cold, rainy weather. The rubber finally started flaking off, but it lasted quite a while and I didn't give much for it. Yeah, there's gold in them there Sportsman's Guide catalogs. :D

If I cant make it myself, its probably for sale on Sportsmans Guide.....LOL!!

The best buy Ive made on boots was about 8 years ago, listed then as ' German Police boots'' that were actually stamped in the arch ;Made in Finland'', and just when I need a new pair, they have them for sale again; Finnish Military boots with ski binding groove in the heels and a squared toe. high tops and low heels, they are perfect for Tundra cruising, Slather'd in mink oil and lighter than rubber boots, they dry quickly and wear great. Made from Reindeer leather, go's with my Caribou Parka........... :D

Heres a few more pix from a week back or so.

While I wear my ''work clothes'' relentlessly all year round, under that rain gear, parka, sweater is usually a pair of jeans and a teeshirt with SLAYER or ACDC on it....LOL! Them Finn boots are there.....

A head banger! I knew it! Looks like an SKS/AK kinda day. :) I have two SKSs. One's a 16" paratrooper that I put a folding stock on. It's just a backyard range toy, don't hunt with it. The other I dressed in a camo sporter stock, mounted a scope and put a green laser on, and it's my hog gun for night hunting. All that night vision stuff is crazy expensive and this set up works great. The light cost me 100 bucks from an Amazon source. It lights up the world out to past 100 yards, all I need, and the hogs seem to ignore it. I'd have set it up on my M4, but I wasn't doing anything with that SKS and I kinda prefer the 7.62x39. I get the Russian 154 soft point, Tulammo, Wolf, whatever brand. It's a hog's worst nightmare. ;) I handload hunting ammo in .223 with a 62 grain Barnes TSX for the M4, but honestly would rather shoot the bigger round in the woods here, stops 'em with more authority.

I've spent some happy range days plinking with those SKSs. They're cool and cheap to shoot. I used to order (25 years ago) 123 FMJ for 100 dollars a thousand. Them were the days. :D
