Lately, we have had dangerously hot weather here. Temperatures have reached in excess of 114F without the heat index. In the past two weeks, we have literally had a few hours between Excessive Heat Warnings. The other day it was 93F at 8:00am. In other words, it has been too hot to shoot outdoors.

We have a nice indoor range BUT it has been packed because of the heat. Also, you can only shoot pistol calibers for safety reasons. (Which is completely understandable.) I am looking forward to September and temperature below triple digits.

Anyone else suffering from this in there locale? What are you doing to endure the weather?

im a polar bear......i can handle sub-freezing temperatures just fine......but if the temp rises over 85*.....youll find me in the nearest swimming pool filled with cold water and plenty of ice cubes......i absolutely cannot handle the heat.

luckily for me, this summer has been pretty mild....with the exception of a few days....the avg temp has been in the high 70s low 80s.

It's hot here in Texas for sure. I was watching the 10:00 news the other night and it was still 100F out.

I have plans to go to the range on Sunday (outdoors) and I'm anxious to see how long I hold up. Taking a cooler of water and snack to help me eek out a few extra minutes lol

The last three weeks have been a solid 90-100 degrees with ultra-high humidity, here in Ohio. Only the last few days has it settled into high 80's. I just put on swimming trunks and a cut-off t-shirt, grab my guns, go out back of the house, then proceed to sweat through my clothes while shooting. It's not comfortable, but it's better than not shooting at all, I suppose. I'm lucky enough to be able to shoot around my property, as well as enjoy a dip in my pool, afterward! :) Hang tight... I'm sure we'll have record freezing winter weather this year, to compliment our hellish summer.

I too hate the heat. It has been in the 80's here recently. Colorado in summer is too hot a desert for my tastes; I just try and bear through the three months of pain.

I like temps in the low fifties and below. I don't mind some gun activity in the hot; shooting handguns or busting clays is okay, but I simply cannot do any benchrest shooting when I'm burning up and sweating. When precision and accuracy are demanding all my efforts and senses, I have to be as comfortable as possible. And there are not too many temperatures that are too low to remain comfortable. Bring on the freeze!

My electric bill is casuing me to put off even starting a lay-away on a relatively inexpensive RIA. Ah well, at least I can rent a Springfield RO at the local-ish indoor range for $0 plus ammo costs. Glad I got the 2nd best membership there so lanes and rentals are free, just need to put their ammo through the rentals as the range has them 'on loan' from the manufacturers.

If I were smart, I'd get a diesel power plant and run it off of deep frier fat from teh local mom-n-pop BBQ places near me so I could afford to keep the house at the 75 its been at the last month.

I'm looking forward to September when my state goes back to Missouri from Misery. lol I do feel very bad for the folks down there in northern Texas, that truely is some very damaging heat. :(

75?! Must be nice! Mine has been at 80 and my bills are still sky high

Around here it's been 95+ with very high humidity. Too miserable to enjoy shooting or even riding. I'm staying in with the A/C and reloading. When the temp breaks we'll just grab as much ammo as we want and not even think about it.

You people are nuts. 70+ is where the weather starts being nice.
The moment it dips beneath 50 I am breaking out my pea coat and beanie.

I understand the need and the desire to be comfortable, however there is no guarantee and not very likely that it is going to be clear skies, 72 degrees, and a gentle breeze blowing in a fight for your life. It is quite possible that since it is so hot, that you might get in a fight in said heat I do not let weather deter me from training. Rain, sun, heat, cold etc.

It's been crazy hot here for the past month. Saw a bank time/temp sign this morning- 11:52am, 105`. Two or three nights ago it said 102 at 10:48 at night.

Ive been bearing it the last few weeks but decided to skip the range today because I was sick of the heat. Ill sit inside and contemplate loads for when it cools off a bit.

It's not about being uncomfortable. It's about actually getting sick or dying from the heat.

A police officer and sanitation worker have both died here this week from the heat.

I feel I should point out that I was at a range a couple years back where the temperature was 130*, you were required to wear full clothing, body armor, and helmet, which a heavy black weapon strapped on. I should also mention that the range was bi-directional and I was extremely lucky because I had an air conditioned room unlike many at this range. So 114* doesn't deter me from an outdoor unidirectional range anymore. :)

I hear ya...our shooting excursions tend towards very early morning and back in the AC by noon.

USPSA matches around here start at 1 and end around 6. I still can't figure that one out. Last weekend was pretty shooting full, and I think I went through 4 shirts and two coolers of drinks....just miserable.

Last week I checked out an indoor range I'd never been to before. No one told me they didn't have AC, or even a half decent ventilation system. It was around 100° outside, so imagine the nastiness inside! I could barely get a grip on rounds I was loading into my mag my hands were sweating so bad.

Talked to our oldest daughter a couple days ago. She was at 104 in TX (evening temp), we were at 74 with clear skys and a light breeze. Actually has been unusually cool and wet this spring/summer here in North Central WA. Very pleasant.

We usually get a couple days over 90 every year, but not up here on the mountain this year. Highest so far has been 86. Bright clear sky with sun and 76 right now (12:00), 5 mph breeze, RH 35%, low last night of 39.

It's a pleasent 75degrees here in my living room.....

(but for the past month, OUTSIDE has been TERRIBLE here in MO - up until today, we finally caught a large thunderstorm that cooled things off)

Y'all need to learn what to wear and how to deal with a little warm weather :neener:

I live near the Keys in South Florida - Weather about now is 95° or so, with the heat index at around 105-110°, humidity in the 70-80% range.

Drink some cold beer, and relax... there is a reason Jimmy Buffett sings about paradise and Margaritaville :)

The office where I work all weeks is nice and cool.
I leave early in the morning, and get home late at night (9-10hr days)
I never even notice it gets hot out.

My brothers however, inform that that the NOVA/DC area gets preeeeetty hot during the day, doing boyscouts and all.

Y'all should do more gunsmithing and less complaining!

Go buy some 1911 parts and build a 100yr anniversary edition! (1911-2011)

Pretty hot in our area.

Admit it, you've picked up a firearm that's been out in the sun for a while and gone "WOW....THATS HOT!" But have you ever wondered just HOW hot?

Wonder no longer

Virginia, Mid July
Ambient Temperature 97 degrees with a very light breeze, clear skies and sunny (Humidity about 77%).

CZ-75 Compact
FN FNP-9

Both test subjects started at near ambient temperature and were placed near each other and left in direct sunlight for approximately 30 minutes.

CZ-75 Compact (aimed at frame just in front of safety lever)
Temperature-01.gif

The black polymer coated and all steel slide and frame of the CZ soaked up a LOT of heat. The gun was simply too hot to pick up or touch except for the rubber grips which were just "very warm". The gun also took quite a while to cool back down and was still noticeably warm when I re-holstered it later.

FN FNP-9 (Aimed at slide just behind extractor)
Temperature-02.gif

The matte stainless slide on the FNP-9 certainly didn't absorb as much heat as the CZ did but it seemed like it actually took even longer to cool back down to ambient (sadly I didn't think to time it). Interestingly enough the polymer frame was "only" 107 degrees.

Just for comparison, hot water at 140 degrees can scald in as little as 10 seconds and it is recommended that a hot water heater be set no higher than 125 degrees.
