Too Hot

Back when the Clinton administration was pushing for midnight basketball courts for inner city youths to prevent crime I sent letters to my elected officials asking them for money to build lighted shooting ranges for us rural folks. My friends and family all said that I was crazy and I'm sure I was put on another government list somewhere.

Well I would love to have a lighted outdoor range during this heatwave.

I dont mind the heat a bit. I try to go to eagle peak shooting range out hear in leander around 2 o'clock cause I know I'll have a couple hrs of shooting by myself. Don't get me wrong its hot here in central Tx, but I'll take the heat like a champ just to avoid a cease fire when ever a new shooter walks up.

It's been a brutal summer here in Texas. WAY too hot, week after week. I think we only had three days in June that remained below 100, and it hasn't improved since. 104 yesterday, coupled with humidity just to make it that much more unbearable.

Last summer, I went to the range pretty regularly. This summer, I've gone once. And by 10 am it was in the mid 90s and time to leave. :barf:

Yeah, it's been hot here in Texas but what summer isn't? I already have to work outside everyday so it sure won't stop me from shooting.

Rock climbers chalk helps you to keep a good grip with sweaty hands about the same as baby powder with a small amount of abrasive in it.I also wrap the joints and palms of my hands with medical tape to keep a solid grip in extended sessions at the range. It doesn't feel as bulky as a pair gloves.

Several days worth of 100+ heat indexes here in NE Florida. Guess I'm one of the lucky ones, I shoot at an outdoor range where all the stations are well covered, and they have fans mounted up above as well. I don't mind the heat; I seem to be OK with it. I wear a havlock style hat, and that helps to keep the sweat out of my eyes. One advantage to the heat is that where the sunlight does get to the shooting bench, it melts down the Bore Butter I use for BP shooting. So I use less of it when it's in a more liquid-like form. But I do need to be mindful about the the guns getting exposed to the direct sunlight- YOW! A case for shooting gloves gets made very quickly.

Yep. I keep some (well, I'm not really sure what it is, they keep it by the free weights at my gym and it feels about the same as the white chalk for your hands at pool halls) in my shooting bag. They were tossing away the loose pieces at the gym, so I grabbed them up.

I just stay hydrated and only shoot for short periods. I split my shooting up into rifle or pistol only. The rifles (AR in particular) get scalding hot sitting on my tailgate waiting for me to switch. I usually only shoot 100 or 200 rounds at a time in this heat. I tend to do quite a bit of reactive shooting (plates or those bouncing polymer deals) with the pistols because it is too dang hot to walk back and forth changing targets.

The indoor range is sounding better and better, but it is annoyingly crowded. They also don't allow double taps or rapid firing strings. I like to switch it up while I'm shooting and do a little of everything, so if I can't run a few mags in rapid fire I just don't even want to go. Plus standing in line without moving and shooting targets that will never move just kind of really bores me after about 20 or 30 rounds and it isn't something I want to pay by the hour to do.
