I was talking to a friend of mine Sunday night at a party and I mentioned I was probably going out to the range yesterday. She immediately says “Can I come, I’ve never shot a gun before and I want to!” I of course immediately get the particulars figured out for meeting up and going shooting.

We headed out to the range in the mid afternoon and I brought along both my pistol (G22) and my rifle (AR-180B). After going over the four rules of safety, showing her how to clear both weapons, load both weapons, and unload both weapons I had her dry fire. After adjusting her grip (she started out with a lose tentative grip) and her stance a bit, we worked her trigger pull. I’ll I have to say is that I wish I had a trigger pull like that when I started, smoooooth!

After 15 or 20 reps of dry fire it was time for the first round. We moved to the 5yd line and she took aim. I had put up a NRA Law Enforcement Qualification target, and put 2 2” dots on it for aiming points (one COM, one CNS/head). I ask where she’s aiming “the chest”, good to go, her trigger pull takes a bit longer then it had been, but then it breaks. With a whoop she takes a step back and stares at the pistol for second, then looks at her target. The hole is about 1.5” above the COM dot, not to shabby for the first shoot. She lines up and puts the next round DIRECTLY IN THE CENTER OF THE COM DOT! The second round I ever fired out of a pistol was so low it almost didn’t make it on paper, and here she was drilling them.

We finished off the magazine, and the vast majority of her rounds were clustered a bit high (1”-2”) over the dot. We took a quick break, and back on the line at the 7yd this time. Again her hits were consistently just a bit high, but almost all were well within the lethal area (had a few flyers, but don't we all on occasion?). After about 7 rounds she wanted to back up to the 25yd line and try and few. Both rounds hit torso, one low left, one high right, but still on the silhouette. We moved to the 15yd line and again both rounds on. One low centerline, the other high right but in the black still.

We continued over to rifle with the same kind of results. Good hits, and great following of safety rules. To finish it all off I had her put a round through a water bottle (wolf 62gr HP), she took the bottle home with her to show off :)

After my initial explanation of the rules she didn’t have any trouble following them, and she would ask if she was unsure what to do in a situation. We both had a great time, and I think I’ve got a new range buddy :)

I introduced two thirteen year olds to shooting this past weekend. The look of delight on their faces after a good shot with a real gun was, as thay say, priceless.
