So today was the day...my 13 year old nephew has been after me for a while about taking him shooting and he wants to deer hunt. Well this year hunting is completely out of the question, well as far as shooting goes.

I had him do a free version of an online firearm safety course and if he did not get a "B" on the test he would have to do it again. Well he got a "B+" so today I took him to a friend's house today to shoot a Ruger Mark IV 22 and a Ruger American .22.

#1 priority is SAFETY and following instruction well he passed that handedly. The pistol shooting at 10 yards could have been better however it was perfectly safe and he was very aware of the safety, his booger hook on the trigger and muzzle awareness. After some instruction for technique his pistol shooting did improve.

The we went to the .22 Rifle at a distance of 54 yards. It is scoped with a 3-9x40. We went over all the safety rules and such and the technique of trigger control breathing etc. His 1st 5 round group was doing well then the excitement got him and he pulled 4th shot way low. After some instruction about cheek weld, breathing and breath control pacing your shots, etc. he placed 3 shots within 1 inch and then shot 2 milk jug caps we had previously setup and went 2 for 2 on them.

All in all showing promise and we've got more work to do for sure before he is ready to shoot at a live animal BUT it was a very positive day and his mom said he is on cloud 9 today.

If he’s enthusiastic about shooting rifles, would he be interested in a youth trap league? That’s the age my son started trap and loves it. Something he can do for the rest of his life.

What would the reaction be if they pulled all the 7-12 grades out at 09:00 and marched them to the football field where the sheriff and deputies were waiting.
Then pulled out all manner of rifles, shotguns and pistols and began demonstrating how to make salads?

Really happened.

It's always a good spending the day shooting with family. Had 2 of my grandsons out in the back yard shooting pellet rifles. It was the older, 13 yo, first time ever handling a gun.took some time but he was in the black when we were done.

Excellent afternoon!

Congratulations to you both; for your nephew for taking the test seriously, listening to your instruction and shooting very well. And to you for instilling safety first with a new shooter as well as bringing the shooting sports to (hopefully) a future lifelong shooter :).

Stay safe.

Nicely done with your nephew! Started out teaching my kids gun safety first thing they were old enough to comprehend what it was all about. Went from BB gun to .22s in no time. Let them pick out their own .22s; one liked rifles, the other strictly pistols. Both are probably better shots than me but I don't mind as it's something we can all enjoy together!

What a great post. About 64 years ago I went camping with my neighbor friend Doug and his family across the street (Salem, Ohio) and my family. We went to a real hunting log cabin site in Medix Run, Pennsylvania. My neighbor’s dad brought along a 22 rifle and we shot at pop cans on top of an old log.

Being 10 years old it was my first experience to shooting and it is still a lot of fun today. Thank you 0P for bringing back some great memories.
