Looking to get into a flintlock just for fun with the kids ,nothing serious like matches or hunting. Been looking at the Traditions Kentucky rifle , seems like a good buy for what it is. I have read that earlier rifles had issues with the lock alignment and strong frizzen spring, but the newer made ones have been good to go. So what can you tell me good or bad ? Prefer to hear from people who have first hand knowledge /own one . -Thanks

My personal experience is with the early ones, had 2 of them come across my bench with bad locks, one had such poor geometry that I couldn't make. it work. IIRC the second one had a soft frizzen, was able to heat treat it and get it working. Overall quality of the gun was mediocre at best, with sand cast brass fittings that were at least a quarter inch thick. I don't know about the newer stuff so can't really give advice, may be a good starter gun. I believe the quality has been improved or they would be outta bidness by now.

Get the Lyman. I have a Traditions percussion Hawken, and it is a decent gun. I was given it, so I can't complain about the price. I have a friend who has the Lyman in percussion, and the quality is much better. If you've done some BP builds and are handy with changing out parts (frizzen, as mentioned) the Traditions kit might be worth the investment.

My son has a Traditions Pennsylvania rifle that he bought 4 months ago. It's pretty much the same as their Kentucky rifle from what I can see. I go shooting with him often and haven't seen him having any problems with that gun.

There's a lot of members here who don't have anything good to say about Traditions firearms, but my experiences so far have been quite good. I have a Deerhunter rifle and a Trapper pistol and like them enough that I'm taking delivery of a Traditions Hawken rifle this week.

For sure you'd be more comfortable riding in a Bentley but my Ford gets me to the same destination.

I like your style brother! My .54 Lyman deerslayer with PRB is deadly accurate.

Nope. No Traditions flintlocks.

Lyman Great Plains or Thompson Center or something made by Investarms (also Lyman but the Cabelas branded ones too. I have an Armi San Marco that was also made by Investarms but it is a caplock ).

Second hand market would save you some coin but make sure to check the bore out good and make sure it has a good flint.
