Folks, just got done reading another thread on here "Disclosure of lawfully concealed firearm on a traffic stop" but I did not want to hijack the thread by going to one specific state.

NY State is very odd about many laws concerning firearm ownership, but what are their laws regarding Disclosure to a LEO during a traffic stop? This is a scenario where a Valid CHL is possessed, and the handgun is either in a concealed holster, or in a holster in a carry bag such as a briefcase.

I've been searching on the web with no luck. Just wanted to see if anyone knew what specifically NY State says about it.

**NOT NYC** just NY State.

If you are one of the 6 people with a valid concealed carry permit in NYS don't worry, the LEO's already know who you are.

/paranoia

"If you are one of the 6 people"

*nervously looking around* What on earth do you mean by that?!

(looks in wallet) It looks valid!! What did they do now?!

...this state is really getting to me.

I lived in NYS for several years, most retarded laws I've ever seen. I think they just hate people in general. My advice would be to absolutely keep that info to yourself, unless asked.

There are a lot of valid New York carry permits, just not per capita in NY City...

+1. While it is a state law, permits are handled at the county level, and once you leave the NYC area, CHL's are generally not a problem (although it is up to the issuing judge).

EVERY pistol owner in NYS possesses a "concealed carry" permit - the pistol permit allows possession of said pistol. Having it "restricted" to target/hunting only is just the judge's way of saying, "OK, you can have a permit - but if you're caught carrying outside these narrow restrictions I've laid before you, I'm taking it away". Being the NY is a "may issue" state, the issuing authorities can make up just about anything they choose.

Carrying outside the restrictions on a permit in NY is not against the law, and there are many who do so - betting that their lives are more important to them then the chance that they might lose their permit.

It's actually the same in NJ. While a carry permit may state "for employment purposes only", or something similar, there's nothing in the LAW that would make it a crime to carry outside those restrictions. The statute in NJ reads "possession of a handgun, without first obtaining a permit to carry, is unlawful"

Going even further, the statutes state "Any person who holds a valid permit to carry a handgun issues pursuant to this section shall be authorized to carry a handgun in all parts of this State, except as progibited by section 2C:39-5e". That section prohibits carry at educational facilities. But, think about that - unlike many other states, NJ doesn't prohibit carrying in banks, restaurants, bars, etc. Of course, it's practically impossible to obtain one in the first place, but IF.... :D

Tom,you are a godsend!
I love your ever present optimism coming from New Jersey,my parent's state.Although they left in 1950, your continuing contribution against the corrupt NJ machine gives me hope.
Carry on,comrade!
