Would it be possible for a gunsmith to modify an older single action revolver and add a transfer bar system to it? If so, would it be difficult and expensive?
Just curious, as I have an older Sauer & Sohn Chief Marshal .357 Magnum that is near and dear to me and I would like it to have one to avoid having it rest on an empty cylinder.

As a practical matter, no, it is not possible. As a non practical matter, if you throw enough money at it, anything is possible.

Just from a standpoint of cost it would make more sense to just buy a modern Ruger if you really feel you need a transfer bar setup.

Either carry on an empty chamber, or buy a Ruger with the transfer bar. Yes I am sure you can find someone to do it. If they do it for less than $1K range I would question the quality of the work. They would need to rebuild most of, if not all, the internals and that gun has been out of production for a few decades now. If they did it for that price, i would still be worried as it would be a prototype of the design.

No and there is no reason to. If you do it right by loading one, skipping one then loading four, draw the hammer back and lower it on the empty chamber, there is no reason for it. Nor is there any reason to spend hundreds of dollars or more to re-engineer a $200 sixgun.
