Transition To Carry At Home

So, when you get home do you continue to carry your EDC or switch to something else? Do you continue to holster carry or just carry in your hand and set it down near by as you move around?

I'm not comfortable with just carrying around and setting down where I am, but this question is mainly geared towards summer carry. Where you may carry something smaller ED and possibly switch to a full size when home, or not. Also do you continue to carry concealed or do you open carry at home?


I feel that this is a worthwhile discussion for someone (like me) who is new to carrying ED.

Personally in the warm months I'm thinking I'd ditch my small gun for an OC full size when I get home.

Everyone draws the line somewhere, but I'm not about to start carrying a handgun around the house. That being said, I have other security measures in place which would prevent all but the most determined attackers from gaining entry before I could reach a rifle.

I don't carry around the house but I do drop my carry on the counter when I come through the kitchen. I lives there till I go to bed.

When I get dressed I put my S&W Shield on IWB. When I go to bed I take it off. Keep it simple.

I generally don't carry at home inside the house. If I'm staying inside for awhile I just put on gym shorts or sweatpants, as is seasonally appropriate, with the guns all in their locked locations.

When I get home it gets put away within easy reach. When I go to bed, it's on the night table. No children in the house..... . Anymore. And yes, the KISS formula again works best, as Armed24/7 said.

I don't transition, my EDC stays on me until it's time for bed. I have kids in the house, and their pop in friends, so I can't just leave guns around.

Even if I didn't have kids in the house, I'd keep my EDC on me just like I keep my keys on me. That keeps a gun with me at the ready at all times. I don't want to have to run to a gun somewhere in the house if I needed it in a hurry.

If you really feel threatened enough to carry in your own home, I think you should move! Remaining on high alert 24-7 will wear out your adrenal glands!

There is stuff in the bedroom that I can grab if I really need to, but I am glad to disarm when I enter my home.

I shift my EDC from a belt holster, to a shoulder holster w/ two spare mags that always stays in the same central hidey-spot.

It takes about two seconds for a bad guy to kick a door in, it can and does happen even in nice areas, and while I have other security measures to keep them out, I choose to carry at home at all times. I keep my EDC (Glock 43) on my side the entire day, but sometimes I'll swap it out for the G19 when I get home, depending on how I'm feeling.

Who says having a gun on you means you are on "high alert"? And clearly we aren't talking 24/7 since we aren't talking about (that I have seen) carrying while sleeping in our home.

It can but it shouldn't. I would upgrade my door if I felt compelled to carry around the house.

If I did feel the need I would just lay it nearby in it's holster and move it as necessary.

I disarm in the house, but there is a 9mm Glock in every room loaded and ready but out of sight. Outside working I wear my beater glock 23, and it sits on the bench when I'm in the workshop out back. Also a crack barrel 20 gauge back there.

Going to echo some of what Warp said and just reiterate feeling threatened has nothing to do with carrying while at home.

I'm really surprised at the folks so far that have said they don't carry at home.


Anyhow, back to the topic at hand, I think I'm going to be switching in warmer months to my full size when I get home, open carry. In the colder months (already carrying the full size) I'll just swap to an open carry rig when I come home.

I didn't carry in the house until we had a number of break ins on my block, the last being across the street. Leaving guns laying around the house with kids isn't an option. If I'm dressed casually during work and I don't change when I get home, my EDC stays on. If I do change, usually into a pair of gym shorts and a tee shirt, I pocket carry a P938.

I live in as safe a neighborhood as you're going to find in the Chicago area and needing a gun while at home is not something I dwell on, however as my neighbors found out anything can happen anywhere.

I rarely go very long without it. My police friend told me there were many more home invasions than I saw on the news.

A co-worker had a friend that was killed in his kitchen (by a man that had done odd jobs for him) because when the attack started his pistol was in a drawer ...and the BG was between him and gun. So, I carry at home.

For many people it is reasonable to believe that, when at home, they will have more time to respond to a threat than when out in public. In my home, random strangers cannot stand a foot or two away from me, or just walk right up to me completely unimpeded. Also, while at home, I and many others as we have seen in this thread, still have pretty quick access to firearms nearby. Such is not the case if you go out and about but your closest gun is in your vehicle or at home.

I think carrying or not when you have allowed somebody into your home is different than what we are mostly talking about in this thread.
