Hey guys,

I've read over the legal statute in NJ and am a little confused. I wanted to go to the range on my bike am not sure it's legal to transport guns on a motorcycle. I was going to take 2 pistols, each in their own hard case and lock the cases with a padlock. Throw that and some boxes of ammo into a backpack and go. However, I don't want to get pulled over and arrested.

Here's the law:

97B.045 TRANSPORTATION OF FIREARMS.
Subdivision 1. Restrictions. A person may not transport a firearm in a motor vehicle unless
the firearm is:
(1) unloaded and in a gun case expressly made to contain a firearm, and the case fully
encloses the firearm by being zipped, snapped, buckled, tied, or otherwise fastened, and without
any portion of the firearm exposed;
(2) unloaded and in the closed trunk of a motor vehicle; or
(3) a handgun carried in compliance with sections 624.714 and 624.715.

Please help.

It's a crotch rocket so I'd rather not put a trunk on, although I might consider some tank bags if that would make it legal.

It's an 08 R6

Call the NJSP firearms division. However what they say and ho a local LEO will react could be two different things.

I have no idea where you got that text, but it's not NJ law. New Jersey laws covering the transporation of firearms are:

2C:39-5b - says it's illegal to possess a handgun without a permit to carry
2C:39-6f - says the above doesn't apply to someone transporting a firearm directly to/from a target range
2C:39-6g - says that when transporting under the above exemption, the firearm must be unloaded, and contained in a closed and fastened case, gunbox, securely tied package, or locked in the trunk of the vehicle in which it is being transported.

Given that the motorcycle has no trunk, then a closed and fastened case would meet the statutory requirements. A padlock, while not legally required, is a good idea.

All statutes above can be read in their entirety at http://www.njleg.state.nj.us
