RKIs...

Possible upcoming trip to KY here.

Any basic handgun transport laws for KY not seen on packing.org?
Any special laws for Lexington, KY area - seems there's preemption....
Any general KY gun advice?

It appears that I can transport a loaded or unloaded handgun in car's glove box (but not console box, etc.)

Hi Bill

I live in Frankfort, Ky (about 30 minutes from Lexington) and I go there often. You are correct about carrying in the glove box of your vehicle. Open carry IS legal in Ky and I do it all the time, and there aren't any preemption laws persay. However, some Lexington cops still discourage open carry and may confront you with it if they see you with a holstered gun on your side....just depends on the cop. I've not had any real problems with any of them personally, but they might check your ID and see if they come up with anything on your record, etc. Just stay out of the bars and off the University of Kentucky campus and you'll be alright if you don't have anything questionable on your record. Generally speaking, Kentucky is a pretty gun friendly state.

Agreed. I travel all over KY. Handgun stays in the glove box. No problem. I haven't tried open carry, though it is legal, so I can't speak to that.

Perhaps not relevant, I dunno.

I have been perused by Kentucky LEOs at least 2 times in in the last few years. Soberiety checks. One local cop in Kevil looked at my 1911 laying on the seat and asked, "Is that your weapon?" (I like to call it a Firearm, LEOs like to call them weapons) and I responded, "Yes" (pretty obvious, since I was the only occupant in the vehicle). He suggested that I should tell the ossifer immediatly that I was armed. I said OK. No problemo.

Another time at a check the Statie looked at my .44 Bulldog on the dash, since the missus was on the seat and said, "That is totally lawful, what you have done (firearm on the dash for all to see), thank you and proceed, have a good evening." The missus was telling me that I was going to be wearing orange coveralls. I guess I straightened her out.

Open carry is legal in Kentuck as best as I can tell.

They take a K and a E and a N and a T and a U and a cky and it spells Kentucky, and it means Paradise. (an old song I like to sing) :)
