My usual area setup is just my CCW, a spare 18 round mag and a nother spare mag in the car.
When we travel to the bigger cities to see family I bring my travelling bag with a few more spare mags (and the little gun safe to store the gun at night, and extra medical supplies, etc).
Not riots but we did have the misfortune of being on the road when some nutbag decided to just start shooting cars on the interstate, we were actually near a stretch and time when he killed a woman, and happened to be driving the other way when the police had stopped him, was just across the causeway and saw him get shot by about 4 deputies. Thank goodness they were good shots cause a stray would have been coming right at me and my very pregnant wife.
With these pop up, no warning, riots and their penchant for taking over highways, with the nature of some interchanges avoidance may not be possible even if you see it coming, it may be too late.
I'm also still reminded of the scene years back when a flash mob from Milwaukee decided to go to the state fair and mob up and abuse folks stuck in bumper to bumper traffic trying to leave the fair. Abusing people, damaging vehicles, everything. I'm sure there were kids in some of those cars too, very scary. Before the state had CCW or there might have been more "newsworthy" events that night.

My eyeballs, brain and a little bit of foresight. It’s a lot easier to avoid confrontation than try to shoot your way out of one, at least for me.
