Ohio does not have reciprocity, so Concealed Carry is out. Understood. Using the google, I'm getting mixed info. I found that I can carry in my car if passing through, but if I stop for gas or anything, I have to unload and lock up. I've read something else that said the safe travel does not apply to those with an Illinois destination.

Here is what I want to know.....to remain legal in Chicago, what do I have to do with my handgun while there? Unload and lock up? Field strip? I don't care, but I want to have my gun at least available if readily available is not an option. I can also just leave it home, which I would prefer not to do.

Attached is a link to Illinois Carry that answers your question. You'll also want to think about where you can store it while you're here. If you're staying with family or friends that's hopefully not an issue. If you're staying at a hotel you need to confirm whether there's somewhere you can store it safely. FWIW, I'm in a similar situation in that we're spending a week in the Adirondacks in une with family. I can't carry in New York State, so I'm leaving my gun at home.

Thank you. I actually did just that....left it at home. You know...you hear the old "rather be sentenced by 12 than carried by 6" thing, but the world doesn't operate in extremes. Personally, I'd rather be hyper-alert for a weekend than spend thousands defending a dumb mistake.

I'm going to throw something out here. I can only say, "this is what the chief of police told me when I lived in New Jersey". It may not be so for all other states or even true fro N.J; but when it comes to N.J. anything goes.

If your final destination does not allow you to carry a pistol, you are legally not allowed to bring it with you even for a visit stay at a friend or relative's house because the person's house in the state IS your final destination.

You can pass through the state as per the "safe travel law" but an extended stay is a no no.

Hopefully Frank Ettin or another well knowledged individual will pick up on this post and either confirm or enlighten me if needed.
