MIAMI -- The civil rights case against four Miami police officers accused of beating a suspect is being thrown out of court after a government witness lied.

Channel 10 News reporter Kelley Mitchell said she spoke to three attorneys involved in the case who said that while you'd expect such drama in a TV show, it rarely happens in a real courtroom.

Trial transcripts from Friday's session tell the story. They show that Armando Rodriguez, a key government witness, said one thing under direct examination and then admitted he lied under cross-examination.

The new information brought in the FBI over the weekend and it was determined that, in light of the testimony, the charges should be dropped against the four officers, George Costello, Jessie Aguerro, George Garcia and Wilfredo Perez (pictured, right).

"To be quite frank with you, it's very mind-gobbling, and it's a mental torture, not only myself have been through, but also my family. And thanks to them, I've been able to pull through," Perez said.

While Perez is free and clear, Costello, Aguerro and Garcia still face charges in another case -- a shooting in Coconut Grove.

Perez said for now he wants to take a deep breath, but, eventually, he will likely want to return to police work.

It appears that the "witness" and the "victim" knew each other from time spent together in prison and cooked this plot up. The Prosecutor has some egg on his face now...
