Howdy all,

I'm looking to getting an AKM rifle. what i wind up choosing is not the matter I wanna discuss. I have scoured the internet, and, despite the fact that I lvoe all AKs, even the disformed half children(haha), theres a certain look that I just feel.. matches me.

I've looked at Underfolders, but decided against them due to comfort, and difficulty getting a good sight picture. I've considered ACE folding stocks, but, it just didn't seem to be me. Wire stocks and Tapco furniture are out of the question(again, the look is not me.. plus, it just looks trashy).

So.. I looked into AKS74 furniture, and found that stock you just fall in love with at first sight. Triangle stocks...

So, the next question was, how do I get THAT onto an AK47 rifle.

well, KVAR sells a triangle stock specifically for AKM's, for 160(actually, 275) bucks.
The trouble is that.. well, besides the price.. compare these two pictures:

the KVAR stock. Notice the extra length, as compared to this:

obviously, One can't just drop in a 74' stock into an AKM receiver.
I have heard that you can replace/modify the rear trunion, but that should be done by a smith.

I would like to know the process of getting the AKS74 triangle folding stock on an AKM rifle.

links to instructions would be good too. Also, an estimate at the costs.. and a list of parts.
Thank you. I've lurked for a while, and now that I've come up with a dilema that I can't find an answer too.. I do hope that The High Road and those here can point me on the right path.
=)

Here's some info: http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=546850

And here's a bit more: http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=569422

Long and short of it is there are cuts made in the rear of the receiver to accept the hinge and the angle of the rear block.

There is also a cut and a hole drilled near the front of the receiver (into the bottom of the front trunnion as well) to accept the keeper latch that retains the stock in the folded position.

You need the rear block, assembly (including stock, latching mechanism, spring, pins, etc.), and also the front keeper pin, hook, and spring.

here is mine..I really like the side folder...

I'm not sure where this "angle" thing came from, but there is no special angle to the receivers with side folders.

The commies just didn't want to waste the time grinding each one to fit or retool their assembly line just for these.

Take a close look at the picture in Post 4. You can clearly see the difference in the way the rear of the receiver tube is cut to fit at the hinge vs. the way the standard receiver is cut.

I used to have a copy of a shop drawing that gave the dimensions. I'll try to find it again.

Or look here: http://www.nodakspud.com/page2.htm Compare the NDS-1 and the NDS-1KP right beneath it. The angle is very plainly visible.

I'm kind of astonished that you'd never noticed that before! :)

Ah ha! Found it: http://pookieweb.dyndns.org:61129/AK/buttstock/stock_plans.jpg

Angle is 6 degrees.

That drawing also nicely shows how mmuch more material is removed from the left side of the receiver than from the right (about 3/8") to accomodate the barrel of the hinge.

I can take some pictures of the differences when I get home if you'd like.

The AKS- receivers would undoubtedly be stamped by a different die than the standard -74 receiver, no? I can't imagine they'd do any hand work to cut each one individually to fit.

Well, take it as a compliment that I'm proud to have finally stumbled onto something you didn't know! :)

The angle is different on the 4.5mm and 5.5mm folding stocks.
It's 6 degree for the 4.5 units and 4 degree for the 5.5 units
5.5mm for the most part is the new Russian "poly folders".
Go with the 4.5mm as it will fit a US made poly folder and a
Bulgie metal folder.

On that, I do not think there is a difference.

I've built several with both Russian 5.5mm hardware and Bulgarian 4.5mm hardware and noticed no difference. All were built on Nodak NDS-2SF and NDS-1KP receivers. There were no gaps in the fitment of either rear block with the Nodak receiver.

Well, not here to have a pissing match with you.
Just sharing info to the OP that a 4.5mm pin is 6* and
a 5.5mm is 4*.
Hell, check kvar, they even tell you the Russian folder is a different
angle.

would be amazing to find a video somewhere of this stock conversion.. you know, like those old TLC episodes.. "this old house", me thinks?

"This old AK?"
LOL.
