After some air gun practice with my son. Thought I would try the Hi Point carbine I bought a couple of weeks ago.

Put thirty round through it.

First 10 round mag. 10th round failed to feed and after putting it back in the mag it stove piped.

2nd 10 round mag (different mag). 2 stove pipes.

Last 10 rounds was done 5 per mag. All good feed and extracts. Including last 4 rounds done as fast as I could pull the trigger.

Accuracy was quite good. From around thirty feet (same target from air gun), probably 2 inch group. This probably includes me being rusty, as I haven't shot in about 4 months.

Well at least it did not blow up or shatter. Now donate it to one of those gun buyback progams and buy a real gun.

so it is safe to say that reliability is not a factor in the hi-point carbine? that dosen't sound to good there Flyboy, i bet is was frustrating as heck too all those malfunctions!

I can't say I really have extended experience with this model, but I did put a few boxes through one a few years ago. I don't remember what ammo I was using exactly, after all this time.
We plinked, not shooting for groups, but the soda cans at thirty yards or so seemed to reflect decent accuracy. At no point during the afternoon did we experience any malfs. Could have been just an unusually reliable example of the type, and the ammo may have been pretty good. I think I remember we had some jhp and fmj, all of which fed, fired, and ejected well.
Again, limited experience with the arm, but worth mentioning.

A week later, I bought a Ruger PC40, which I liked well enough too.

I don't consider a few malfuctions with the first twenty rounds any big deal. My 45 smith and wessin stove pipped ever once in a while up till 200 rounds.

Now if it keep stove pipping, probably will sent it in.

Over all i like it. A nice cheap plinker.

If you buy a $150 gun and it jams on the first mag: "it's total junk"

If you buy a $1500 gun and it jams on the first mag: "the manufacturer recommends a 200 round break-in period prior to fielding."

Don't let the naysayers get you down. If I see a HP carbine at a good price, I'm jumping on it just to play around with. Good luck with your "break-in period"

The only company that is using the break in excuse of late is Kimber and their quality has gone down hill.

on the highpoints, you really need to check the feed lips, and also the mags require several hundred rounds break in time. Also , this will sound bad, but make sure all the stock frame screw aren't too tight, they would rather be a little just over hand tight.

fun gun

A little searching will reveal that most all Hi Point Carbine owners are pleased with the performance of their gun. As so far as being a "REAL" gun...dont be mislead by those believers that the 223/5.56....is the end all... be all... "REAL" gun.

Always give the magazine a sharp "smack" on the back of your hand before inserting into the well. It works with my Hi-Point, 9mm pistol.

Opps. Never mind that. You said your's was stove piping. Most complaints I hear come from the round nose diving into the feed ramp.

If it continues, someone on the Hi-Point forum can probably give you an idea on how to correct that particular problem. Check them out at..

As others have said, try giving it 100 rounds and see if it is still doing this. Also, you might want to try different ammo. My wife's high point loves Blazer Aluminum, but has problems with Winchester White Box. If neither of these work, contact High Point. I bought a non-functioning used carbine and High Point completely rebuilt it for free.

Well, I've put about 5000 rounds through mine(Wolf, Blazer, it eats whatever I feed it), and I've never had a malfunction, even at day 1...If it continues to give problems, I've heard their customer service is excellent...You don't mention if you are using factory or aftermarket mags, I have heard of some feed problems with some of the aftermarket mags.

I have a friend who owns a High Point Carbine and his seems to function just fine. I personally don't own one but if the right deal came up I probably would consider taking the plunge. They are a fun gun.

Factory mags. I Plan on putting some more rounds though it before i think there is a problam.

I have the .40 version and have never had a single problem with it. Dont listen to the gun snobs its a great gun for the money and hi point will fix it free if it has a problem.

Don't let the naysayers who've never owned one get you down. You can get those stovepipes gone by doing the standard trick of loading all of your magazines to full capacity and laying them on a shelf for about a week. This will set the springs correctly and it will function without flaw from then on. I've had to do this to magazines of all types, Sig, CZ, Colt, Wilson, Hi-Point, etc.

Then run a hundred or two rounds through it for final polishing of the feed lips.

I have never had to load my magazines and let them set to get them to work right. I too have used a lot of mags. You get what you pay for.

I will simply offer the same advice I do to anyone having problems with feeding, extraction or ejection with a new gun and that is to try a different kind of ammo. The variety of ammo today, especially in 9mm Parabellum, is so extensive that no gun maker can possibly guarantee that every kind of factory ammo (not even to mention reloads) will function 100% in his gun.

A few makers even state flatly that they recommend "Brand X" factory ammo and use of anything else voids the warranty.

good gun

my $100 used hipoint 9m carbine functions fine, no problems in over 500rds. I have a friend who only buys expensive AR clones, and he never has a problem free range day....guess you get what you pay for.
