I wrote and posted this on another forum but figured I'd post it here too since there doesn't seem to be a large amount of info on these online yet. Anyways here it is:

Not so long ago I walked into my local Academy Sports store hoping that they had one of the guns that had recently piqued my interest in stock. That gun was the Tristar L120 9mm. A relatively new pistol to the American market, this CZ75B clone is made in Turkey to military specs, according to Tristar anyhow, the company that is importing them. This company also claims that they're built to NATO specs, meaning that the frame must endure a 50,000 round endurance test and that all parts must be either chrome lined or chrome plated. I have no idea if any of this is true but getting this response from their customer service department when I asked about the longevity of the L120 was surprisingly comforting. The gun definitely feels well made.

There are several things that will make this pistol attractive to the average shooter. First of which is the price. At $350 these things are well below the cost of the CZ75B and that alone is a good reason to consider them. Then there is the fact that you get two 17 round Mec Gar magazines and magazine speed loader, all of which come in an inexpensive but not terrible foam lined plastic case with sliding locks in front.

What is in the box?

When you open the box you'll find the pistol itself, an extra magazine, a speed loader, a manual with complete specs/instructions, and a polymer bristled bore brush. Small pleasures of course but on a pistol in this price range it is a decent package.

Fit/Finish:

The fit and finish on the Tristar pistols are actually very good, better in fact on the inside than my CZ75B. The flat black color is non reflective. The front of the grip is serrated slightly, I'm assuming to help you keep ahold of it during firing. The top of the slide is also serrated so that it doesn't blind you if you're shooting outdoors. Sights are your standard three dot system and are easy to acquire like most military sidearms.

Reliability:
I've only put about 200 rounds through this pistol so far but it has functioned flawlessly thus far. The internals still look brand new as if the gun had never been fired. The fact that the Canik pistols being imported by Tristar are reliable is not a big secret, there have been quite a few positive reviews online and that is part of what steered me to this gun. The other thing was that I also bought the Tristar C100 a short time ago and have now put over 1,000 rounds through it without a single issue.

Specs:
The frame is constructed of a very light aluminum alloy and the slide is steel. The barrel is 4.7" and the action is your standard DA/SA with the ability to set the hammer to half cock. Unlike the actual CZ75B, the safety can be set to "safe" when the hammer is down, at half cock, and when the hammer is all the way back. The magazine capacity is 17 rounds and a spare magazine is included in the package. CZ75B magazines WILL fit and function in the L120 and vice versa. The SA trigger is light and IMO better than the stock CZ75B trigger. The DA trigger leave something to be desired and is long/heavy like your average CZ75B.

Overall I think these are a great buy and are well worth considering if you are searching for a light, full size DA/SA pistol with a nice capacity and good accuracy.

I have the C100 for over a year now and have put at least 500 rds down its pipe with out any issues ...it also acts as a house gun as well as a carry. I've find them to be well made and accurate . I've owned a lot of pistols and I can honestly say that at this price point its hard to beat!

I don't own one(yet), but I know the guys on the CZ forum talk alot about clones and the Tristar pistols get very good reviews and seem very well liked.

Thanks for the great review. Looks interesting enough, especially at that price. The real question though is how well it holds up over the long haul. Please keep us updated from time to time in regards to how reliable and durable it is with continued use.

Nice review, thx! How is muzzle rise compared to other pistols?
Tomac
Recoil and muzzle rise are about on par with the CZ75B. The low bore axis and ergonomic style of the grip make recoil very light. This should be a good gun to start beginners on or a decent gun for more experienced shooters as well. I am pretty impressed. Tristar apparently makes a steel framed version as well although I haven't seen it, all Academy carries are the aluminum framed models.

Nice review. I handled the chrome version of this gun recently. It also had an aluminum frame. It seem well made, and felt just like my 75B, albeit a bit lighter. The chrome was a bit more expensive, but I liked how it looked, and I am sure the finish is more durable, so it is worth a few more bucks.

I really like that skinny front sight. Even when I could see great I liked skinny front sights, and now with older eyes I need a lot of room between it and the rear sight to let light through.

I'm really interested in either the L120 or the C100. The gun would serve as a sort of all-around pistol; mainly as a house gun, but maybe with the chance of being carried at some point in the future.

Kiln, since you own both the C100 and the L120, maybe you can give me some insight as to the relative "shootability" of the two? I have some experience with a full sized CZ75, and found it to be very easy to control and shoot accurately, but I've never handled one of the compact CZs. I was just wondering if the slightly smaller size and lower weight is a hindrance at all. I figure as long as you can still get a full grip on the gun it should feel similar.

They make a version that looks almost like the Baby Eagle. I will admit to looking at that at Academy many times.

In my opinion the L120 and C100 are both pretty accurate, especially at defensive ranges. The C100 still has low recoil and fits the hand just fine. The smaller size and weight don't impact the gun in any notable way. The full size model is a bit easier to shoot accurately but both are comfortable and work very well. The size difference is enough that if I were looking specifically for a carry gun, I'd go with the C100. As a home defense gun I'd go with the L120 for the increased size and controllability.

I just picked one up at Sportsmans Warehouse on a red-tag special for $299 the 120-L model.Feels great in the hand and feels like a quality gun.I'm a stainless gun guy but mine is blued.Looked at on-line advertising reviews and was impressed with the quality and the price.Originally wanted a CZ-75b in stainless but jumped on this deal.Mine only came with one magazine but they are available from Tri-star.You say a CZ-75 mag fits this model maybe I'll find one locally cheaper.Sometimes cheaper guns are great values and under-rated awesomeness that make great shooters. It's a keeper!I'm happy with the purchase.

They had another model called "The Shark".I thought they were a little Clunky looking and the chrome finish was kinda cheesy looking. The 120-L was sleek and the barrel length was more to my liking.Like many CZ-75 guys say it just fits good in the hand.
Living Gun Check to Gun Check it's a hard scrabble life. It's a winner!

If the smaller size doesn't impact the gun in a noticeable way, I'll probably lean towards the C100. Ideally I would get to handle or even shoot both, but that doesn't seem likely. I'll probably try to handle a compact CZ75, I figure as long as I can get my hands completely on the grip I'll go for the C100, otherwise I'll go for the L120.

I have large hands an my CZ Compact PCR (lightweight alloy frame) fit me great, and shoots as well as my full size, all steel 75B. Hard to believe but true.

The Tristar C100 is similar in size, aesthetics, and function to the CZ Compact. It is small enough to conceal with relative ease and also light enough due to the aluminum frame.

I also wrote up a review of the C100 a while back. I've got over 1,000 flawless rounds through it now and it is still in great shape.

Here's the link to the C100 review if anyone cares or hasn't already seen it:

I've also read that mags for the CZ compact will fit the C100. I know the C100 will accept CZ75/Tristar L120 mags, although they do hang out well past the grip.

The 120-L is alloy and the 120-S is steel framed. The S model is available at Buds Guns on-line.I found this out searching for information about these guns.

The Turks are making very good pistols for the money. My SAR CZ clone for $355 is much better finished inside and out than my older CZ 75 that I bought 15 years ago. Also it has run flawless with 3500 rounds through it without one hiccup. All of the ones that I have seen and read about from Canik and Sarsilmaz, have been excellent.

Canik 55 is a division of Samsun Yurt Savunma, a large defense company in Turkey. They also make the Canik TP9, a clone of Walther P99 that you can buy from $299 -$350. Sarsilmaz is the 3rd largest maker of firearms in the world. They make shotguns, machine guns, assault rifles and pistols for the military and for hunting too. They have been making guns since 1880. S&W and others are importing their shotguns and putting their name on them. Like their pistols , they are a fantastic bargain.

Great review and pics. I bought one yesterday from Academy Sports~ $350. Took it immediately to the range and pumped 150 rounds through it. It worked flawlessly. What great value!! Anyone know if there are "night sights" available for the L120?
