I just picked up Weaver scope mount model 63-B this weekend and installed it on my Marlin 336. After tightenting down the screws, I realized that they had extended far enough to bind against the bolt. I took the mount back to the store and it seems the screws in all the 63-B packages are the same length (approx 1/4" thread length).

Any one else have this problem? I called Weaver and they said they would send me the correct screws (which will have to be no more than 1/8" thread length), but I'm guessing I'll probably get another set just like I have.

If that happens, how difficult is it to file and bevel these screws? Are they a hardened steel? Any other suggestions/tips?

Thanks

Kev

Small screws can be a pain to shorten. Brownells sells a thing they calla screw gizzie but you can make one in a few minutes. If you have a piece of flat metal the thickness you want the screw threads to be, drill a hole that is a fit for the diameter of the screw and file or grind flush. The screw will be square on the end and won't fly across the shop when it pops out of the vise. Trust me on the flying across the shop part.
