I recently bought a Polish made PPS 43 in 7.62X25. I soon discovered that it look a lot better than it shoots. The first mag went off smoothly, the second; two stoppages. It went downhill from there until it would not fire at all. There was no indentation of the primer at all.

Upon pulling it apart the problem was obvious. The firing pin had not been hardened properly and it was badly peened and mushroomed from the hammer hitting it. It had reached the point where it was stuck in the bolt. The retracting spring was no longer able to do its job and the pin was jammed in the bolt to the degree that the hammer could not reach it.

Now, these guns have two piece firing pins and the rear (defective) part was like a 1911s pin. It jumps forward, strikes the front pin and then retracts to the ready position. Because of this, I did not have a runaway sub gun; just a broken gun.

I solved the problem by returning the rear pin to its original contour and then tapering it somewhat. This would let it mushroom a little and still not stick in the hole. I hoped that eventually it work harden enough to be reliable. It seems to have worked. The re-contoured pin has stopped mushrooming and the gun works well now

Anyone else out there run into this problem?
