So my NJ ccw finally approved.Until all limitations litigation is over with I wont be carrying many places. So leaving firearm in truck will happen. Want to install a console safe in my 2022 F-350 Lariat console.Experiences, recommendations, pitfalls? All info much appreciated. thanks Don

Ks5shooter, congratulations to you guys (assuming your wife got hers too)! I called the law clerk several weeks ago, who assured me I should get mine this month (hopefully). Although it's not as secure as the pricier units, I have a Hornady XL lock box that fits perfectly in my Passport's console. It will need some fitting to attach the cable too, and it barely fits my Shield 45 and an extra magazine. As the current law stands now, are we permitted to keep it in the console or is that location considered not far enough away? I hope the whole kit and kaboodle gets overturned.

I made money boxes for a friend of mine that owned a wrecker business. They were all front opening and mounted back under the seat. They were not built like a “safe” but you would have to remove the seat to be able to get tools into a position to open it. Locking nuts inside the box would just spin if someone attempted to unbolt it from the cab going by going under the truck.

When Ca mandated gun storage, I bought a few of these lock boxes off of Amazon. They certainly aren’t bank vault secure, but they will stop the theft from a quick window smash and grab that are so common today.

All I can say is look closely at the dimensions, both the outside to be sure the box fits where you want to put it, and the inside dimensions so any gun you may want to ccw will actually fit inside of it.

Congrats on the permit, stay safe!

That's izzactly what mine is!
My main use is for the jeep when it is topless.
@Riomouse911 is right....they're not too big. I'll try to get a pic of mine today. I had some foam left from another project and I custom fit this bulldog for my Hellcat and a spare magazine.

Folks, even the center console of a 2016 Subaru Outback holds a really small “safe”.— Tilted at an Angle (or a Saxon).

A Sig P228, 225 etc , Walther P99, CZ PCR easily fits,

—and the —black cable— which connects to the seat frame can easily be covered up by anything.

I might suggest an under seat lockbox with cable lock.
You can easily switch between vehicles.
You can ride with a friend.
When you get to the hotel you can use it as a safe for valuables and cable it around something solid.
That's what I use since my center console is way too small.

My small car actually has the computers located under the seats, so mine sits on the floor board of the passenger side seat with a towel over it. The towel is the same color as the car's interior, so you do not notice it from the outside

You’re leaving a firearm unattended in New Jersey? Good luck with that. A reminder that NJ law requires you to report any stolen gun within 36 hours.

I have a Console Vault in my 2019 Toyota 4Runner. Here's one for you Ford:

I have the 4 digit combo dial. The numbers are small and difficult to see. If you need your gun in a hurry and it's dark, good luck.

I have the same thing in my truck and have to agree, you'd have a hard time opening it in the dark. Not bank vault security but prevents smash & grabs. Also keeps the state happy re keeping firearms secured.

An option you could consider. If I were in the position of having to leave my gun in my vehicle on a regular basis I would want something robust since the odds go up that someone will try to get it. While not specifically made for consoles, The FAS1-Compact safe has been installed in quite a few Ford truck consoles, especially by the Raptor owners. It takes a little work to mount it since there are no mounting brackets (you would need to make that) and you have to figure if there is anything in the way under the console to bolt it to the floorboard. They are 7GA steel, Simplex lock, presents your holstered gun when the combination is entered, has an optional key that deadbolts the pushbutton lock for added security when you are away.

$300 though.

For you guys that have this exact brand, other than the difficult lock, how good is it? How difficult was the install? How secure is it? (Can it just be ripped out of the console?) How is the fit and finish? Is it worth the $300?

I used one of the Gun Vault Mini vaults for years. Had it mounted to the floor of more than one truck under the back seat. Has the 4 finger blind keypad and key back up. Could not carry in the courthouse so I stashed the pistol in one of those. Still have it and still works. Retired so I retired it. Couple of LEO friends use a set of hand cuffs to lock a pistol to the seat frame. Works well and fairly inexpensive for quality cuffs. I personally never wanted to clog up my console with a vault I had to unlock every time to get in the console...

Security through obscurity is another good route here. As mentioned the center console and glove box are obvious places to look for a thief.
Trucks in general are tough for weapons storage for lack of a trunk. Although "get a different vehicle" is probabally not a good short term solution, this is a good example of where the sedan shines.

They look in the glove box and the console about 30 seconds before they look under the seat. There is nowhere to mount a box in a vehicle where a thief won't find it, so your vault better well-secured.

Not really. Most modern sedans have access to the trunk through the fold-down back seat. Lock your gun in your trunk? No problem. Break the rear window, gain access to the interior, go through the rear seat, get gun.

My sedan does not have folding seats so...nope that does not apply. Nor is it the only one that lacks that feature, quite a few don't have folding seats.

I don't think I could bring myself to leave a gun in a vehicle in NJ. If the gun gets stolen from the vehicle they'll probably consider it unsecured due to the fact that the thief made off with it regardless of whether it was locked or not. NJ is a place I don't go, but if I had to I think I'd take my chances unarmed.
