Truck/trail gun, beater Rem 760 vs new $300 cheapo hunting rifle

The 760 with the irons sounds just fine to me. Kept in an ATV boot until needed, get one of those extended mags as a reload...fast, accurate, awesome 30-06....yes an AR would work, but a 5.56 and desert winds don't jibe very well. The 760 would be a faster reload than the M44 "I'm guessing" as every M44 I ever saw was rough and very hard in recoil ( meaning slow recovery) Nothing wrong with another Milsurp, like a good mauser. I certainly trust don't any rifle that had a lot of plastic in it. Not out there where "boogermen" live ( well, drug mules passing through). Good luck to you though, and enjoy yourself!
PS I hunted deer near Van Horn,Tx back in the late 90's. The ranch owner used an old M99 Savage with a cheap scope in .243. He was the best shot on the ranch, his men said, and he personally told me that he had to "mix it up" a few times with the bad guys....even pointed to a big, deep canyon and "implied" they were "resting"! wow! It can get rough out there near those guys, so be careful!

Add another vote for a surplus Mauser.

Either one of the Yugo's in 7,92 or or the Czech's that are on gunbroker from South America and Mexico in 7mm Mauser (since you're a reloader).

the good Marlins (the original ones) can be had for $300 if your patient and look around. Many different options for irons or a scope and ammo is cheap and everywhere
