Trying to decide on which one to get, it will be mainly for range purposes.

Those are two very different guns (by design), I don't know why you would have a hard time deciding. Think about what you want right now in a gun and make a decision based on that.

I personally would take the sig over the xd. I think the sig has a stronger reputation for quality, and I personally like the design of the sig more.

Striker fire vs DA/SA. See which one you like better

XDm. Mine's a good one, and I really just don't like SIGs.

Two responses which sum up my feeleings exactly.

If you've run both a DA/SA gun and a striker-fired gun fast and hard and feel that there is no difference, I'd take the xDM.

If you've run both hard, you probably don't fee that there is no difference! ;) DA/SA is a relic -- every time I shoot one I find myself wondering why the idea ever found any acceptance. (Outside of burecratic types who are more comfortable operating a liability clause than a firearm.)

I'll throw in a different perspective. The XD is very easy to disassemble and do some trigger work on if you chose.

Don't even think about it on a SIG.

There are certain advantages. The single action trigger on many DA/SA pistols is shorter and lighter than many DAO and even some SA triggers. Also DA/SA gives you a second strike capability, which you may or may not find useful depending on how you think. DA/SA is also great for practicing with snap caps because you don't have to cock the slide after every shot. I also find the mechanism behind it fascinating.

this is hard. i have a xdm and a sig 220 and i like both; shoot the xdm more though.

I don't think you could really go wrong with either. My first gun was an XD-9 and I absolutely loved it! I currently own a couple Sigs and, well, I love my P229. It all comes down to preference, but I personally prefer the DA/SA design to a striker fired design. The SP2022 is a downright bargain and I'm contemplating buying one while I still can (supposedly, they're going to stop selling them in the US market and focus on the P250, which didn't impress me).

JetGuns has them on sale on their website for $433 in 9mm. The fact that they come with night sights from the factory at that price further sweetens the deal, IMO. I've shot one that a friend owns (in 9mm) and was surprised to see I was shooting it better than my P229.

Any other opinions? I'm going to try to make a purchase by this weekend. Anyone feel the price difference between the XD and the XDM is worth it? I'm just looking for something alittle bit cheaper to take to the range to shoot. My only other gun is a SA 1911 loaded.

Really? I'm a bit of a newb when it comes with doing work on firearms and have done trigger work on all my sigs. Does this mean that I shouldn't have? Hmmm...

Only 2 reasons I can see for the XDM would be:
1. Want the max number of rounds for a house/bed gun, etc.
2. Need the changeable backstraps
3. Competition

If none of the above apply to you/your situtation, I'd opt for the standard XD.
If your shop can get 'em, you might try for the essentials? version (doesn't include all the not quite ready for primetime accessories)
I have an XDSC9 and XDSC40-the XD45C has been on my short list for too long.
