I am trying to determine the age of my S&W 5 shot steel revolver. It has S&W .38 slp ctg on right side of barrel, Smith &Wesson on left side. The S&W logo on left side of frame.
There is mdl 38 stamped under the ejector rod along with "E5" and five numbers.
I ran the serial number through a web site for .S&W with negative results.
No can anyone help me out

I have read that if you email S&W CS with the serial number they will reply with the date the gun was completed and out into inventory.

Are you sure it doesnt say Mdl. 36? A five shot steel frame .38 Special is most certainly a Model 36. Looks like this?

If it has a Model number it was produced after 1957. If it doesn't have a dash number after the M36 stamping (36-2 for example), then it was manufactured before 1988. So, most likely '57 to '87- hope that helps a little.

Oh, and welcome to the forum!

Look for a serial number at the bottom of the grip frame, many Smiths have it stamped there.

Stay safe.

I emailed S&W just about a month ago about the age of my 38spl. They answered in just a day or two. Go to S&W website. Look for Contact. They have a block where to ask questions via email.
