Trying to find a good load for 45LC

I've used Titegroup in 45 colt for several years. It is like a bullseye type powder a little bit goes a long way, but it's designed so that case volume means almost nothing. IE minimun charge with no wading in the case and the velocity shot to shot is very consistant. Accuracy is very good in most guns i've shot it in from 9mm to 44 magnum. Almost no leading with cast lead bullets to. Yes you have to be more carefull about double charging, but you also get more shots per pound of powder.

BTW what's the final word on the safety of small loads in big cases? There was talk of blown guns and such. Barring the double charge is that just urban legend?

The basic problem with such incidents is that they are rare, and it is impossible to know what exactly went on. It is most probable that someone had a double charge, but you know, powders and pressure waves can do strange things.

However, if Red Dot or Unique were prone to blowing 45 LC's, we would have heard about it. I don't know about those other powders you have mentioned, don't use them.

Red Dot gave excellent accuracy for me in the 44 Spl. Was not a velocity champ, so I expect should get good results at moderate velocities in the 45 LC.

My first choice in the 45 LC is Unique, I have never heard of anyone reporting abnormal issues with that powder.

Also, what is the object of the "groove" on some 45LC cases? It just seems to be a convienet place for the case to buckle if the crimp is not right

45 LC loads

I just buoght a Ruger NEW Vaquero yesterday and I love it. I bought some AA#5 to load with as I have a .45 acp it will also work good in.

I have some unique on hand, but it does not meter well for me using my RCBS powder thrower.

Does anyone use GEOX or other Black Powder to load with. If so do you fill the case clear up and compress the load?

It serves as a stop, the bottom of the bullet ought to be resting on the step formed by the groove. The .45 Colt is not the only cartridge that sometimes has a groove like that.
