@LiveLife and others, your killing the true spirit of this thread with your mantras.

now, to the OP… I have some powder (and primers) I will part with and donate. Some VV320, Red Dot, Varget, Titegroup, etc. PM me on what’s best needed for the new reloader and how to legally get it to him.

Smaug mentioned that he is a middle-aged college student... so I'm guessing he is making a mid-career change of some sort. My daugher's boyfriend is doing the same thing.
That was my guess as well, but I didn't pry too much.

Since he's middle-aged, he may have been slowly collecting over 20+ years while he was making more money. Going to school might've cut into his ability to put in hours, and that adds up in an hourly job. I dunno.

They way I envisioned this, a lot of people would just throw in one piece of gear they're not using any more, but that would be valuable to our man. Nobody would really miss anything, but our man would be set up! If you don't have something to spare or if it smells fishy, just move along. As I said, you're welcome to PM me and we can have a phone call. Of course that won't PROVE anything, but we're not talking about buying a car here, hehehe.

What got me thinking of it was my Lee Safety Scale. It works great, but is slower and tops out at 100 gr, so it's no good for bullets. I just got my first digital scale and I thought: "What the heck am I going to do with this nice little balance beam one now?" Then, our man said: "When I get my reloading gear..." <lightbulb>

Maybe, maybe not. I’m coming close to retiring and still take classes every few years to keep CE’s and certifications up to date. In my profession not learning the latest codes and processes makes you expendable. My employer pays tuition and fees but I’m responsible for books and lab materials. It could be this fellow is expanding his horizons. Good for him. I’m still sorting through the rubble of my reloading supplies but I do have some brass he might need. Let us know what he needs that @LiveLife can’t provide and I’ll find a way to help out too. Good people here. We’ve got your back.
We all come into this world naked and fighting for breath; we leave it the same way.

Powder and primers are Hazmat to ship and Hazmat shipping can only be done by commercial outfits.

I got a guy started. I do big on-line orders for myself (multiple 8 lb jugs & 16k primers, back before the current crisis). Instead of making him figure out how to source powder and primers at reasonable prices (no local source is reasonable), I just sold him a couple of pounds of my stuff and 1k primers. He has kept at it and I have sold him more since then.

For powder I have used Powder Valley or milsurp. Milsurp has recently become available again at American Reloading. They have stuff that would cover all of his calibers. For Primers, I would just use ammoseak.

I went back to college to get my BA and teaching credential at age 41. I was the oldest student in all my classes, and (he said with complete modesty) one of, if not the, smartest in most of them. Shoving kids into college at 18 or 19 is rarely a good move; with age comes maturity (we hope) and the ability to
buckle down and get the work done. My three yrs. at the university was some of the best in my life.
As for helping a new reloader, I reckon most of us have items lying around we no longer use that would help a beginner. I have wooden trays for .45ACP, .38/357, and .223 I no longer use. I'd be glad to ship them to him, or anyone for that matter, for free.

I have made many hardwood loading blocks over the years and sold hundreds of them here and on other forums years ago. I still have a bunch in the shop and would be willing to send any I have that will work for him after I see what I have left.

I’ll look around and see what else I have that he may need and list it up tomorrow. Someone here went above and beyond when I mentioned I wanted to build a rifle not long ago and I definitely need to repay some of that generosity to others here. That is one big thing that separates this forum from the rest.

How is he on 38, 223, & 9mm brass?
Case lube is a bottle of red iso heet and 1 ounce of liquid lanolin mixed in a spray bottle. Not gonna get much cheaper and won’t stick anything.

Please send them along. I don’t have trays for him yet. PM me for details. I’m hitting the hay now.

I have a package going out to him Monday containing:
  • Lee Challenger Anniversary Kit
  • Lee 4 die carbide set for 38 Special
  • Lee 3 die carbide set for 45 ACP
  • Lee 3 die carbide set for 9 mm Luger
  • A bunch of Breech Lock bushings
jhansman: Did you have a chance to see what loading blocks you have that you could send along?

that’s a heck of a kit! hope He makes 2 tons of ammo!!

I just want to thank everyone who pitched in for me get get some start up gear. I have wanted to hand load my own ammo all my life. Co parenting six kids put a kibosh on that early on. Now I am the sole earner and a college student to boot. I still have 1 term left. I am hunting for primers now. They seem to be the hardest component to acquire. I will be making some posts as I find the items I need to build my first batch. I have some brass for several of the calibers. Not a lot but it is enough to get my first load up going. I will cruise the sale spots here. I will also do some PIF as soon as I am able to. This is the best forum with the most knowledgeable and kind people on the internet. I really can’t thank you enough.

He shoots 45-70, 5.56, 7.62x39, 38 Spl, 45 ACP, 375 Win, 9 mm

I do not understand how a college student can afford to shoot all those calibers (buying ammo) and have those firearms, yet can not get a reloading kit.? Plus is to proud to request this himself?
When I was in college I could barely afford to eat.?

I have been taking student loans and also been reimbursed by my work and am the sole earner in my house. My wife has physical issues and is about to be caring for my grand parents. I have really been more of a gun collector and less of a gun shooter the last few years. Especially since the election and subsequent ammo shortage.to be honest the last time I burned some ammo was before the pandemic.

What components do you have? I could prime some brass and UPS it to you.

I just got the gear in the mail a little bit ago. I was trying to find primers first. I will try to do a batch of 38 special first because it’s forgiving. I saw a few powders at sportsman’s warehouse a week or so ago. I wanted to get home and look for load data in my books to see if blue dot was in there before I bought it.

I have data for blue dot in 38 special. But it's not in its happy at 38 special pressures.
If you PM me your name and address. I'll send you 100 primed 38 special brass and bullets.
It will be next week sometime before I can send it out.
