I recently became interested in purchasing the Twister pistol kit from dixie gunworks . It can be seen here

But at the price of $112, I would like to know that I'm actually going to be able to put this thing together and that it will shoot. How many of you have purchased and/or had experience with this pistol? Would any of you recommend buying it?

I got my Twister kit from Deer Creek for less than Dixie is selling them for. It is an easy kit to assemble and not too hard to finish either. I used a cold blue to finish it. The only problem I had was the nipples. They were too short so I replaced them with some inexpensive rifle nipples that I filed down and shaped. It took some time but finally got it to be a reliable shooter. With 15 grains of fffg powder and a .350 patched ball I was impressed with its performance. I easily penetrated a 3/4 inch pine board with it. I also tested it on 4 1/2 inches of wet news paper. It went 4 inches into the wet pack. Trigger pull was very heavy at first but got better with use. All the BP deringers that I've bought have required some tinkering and none had a reliable safety mechanism. Find it some where else for less and have fun putting it together but don't expect too much from it.

I have built some of the Classic Arms kits over the years. The first was back in the '70's. Their pepperbox kit. The quality of their kits leaves MUCH to be desired. I haven't built the Twister, but all of the ones I built were horrid. They required extensive corrective surgery to go together right. The metal was poorly and imprecisely machined, the stocks didn't come close to fitting, etc.

If their Twister is like their other kits, it isn't just sand, finish and assemble. It'll require considerable hand fitting, filing and in the case of their cutlass pistol, welding, grinding and drilling. I'm always hoping they have improved their quality. They have a few models that I'd love to own, but after my previous experience, I am hesitant. Good luck and let us know how it works out!
