Sometimes I get to thinking of different scenerios where 5 shots are just not enough, mainly the thought that many criminals today only commit their crimes when in gangs. Suppose one was attacked by three, four, even five perps at once, either driving or walking to the store. Seems that just having a single 642 (or any 5/6 shot revolver) just wouldn't cut it. I obviously don't go looking for trouble, do use my common sense, am usually very aware of my surroundings and have past experience as a LEO. Having said that, carrying only my 642 and NAA BUG just feels like it could be too little in the above scenerio. I do own a few other handguns, none are pocket guns so the thing that has been bothering me is do I get something for belt carry to supplement my pocket weapons or do I get another 642 for more pocket carry? Obviously, if I went to belt carry the sky is the limit, but I prefer remaining discrete which is why I went with the 642 in the first place. Anyone here thought of carrying two 642's? Anyone actually do it?

Heh. if carrying only a 642, and confronted with 4-5 bad guys, I'd say to go with boarding house rules. Everybody gets one before anybody gets two.

Not a bad idea to carry a BUG.

That's why I bought a 3913LS - 9 rounds of more powerful 9mm on strong side just behind hip, still allows me to keep my 642 in a pocket (either one), or at ~1 o clock in an IWB holster, or on my ankle as a backup. Plus reloading the 3913 is a lot more practical then the 642.

You're on the right path thinking of a BUG - you never know when your gun may be disabled permanently - imagine having it shot out of your hands or jamming or a spring breaking, etc.

This is my opinion and not intended to offend anyone or be funny.

Many many years ago, I realized that if I am attacked
by 3, 4 or 5 bad guys, who are armed, I am going to die.
Stallone and Arnold are attacked by large numbers
and never run out of bullets.
Bruce Lee was attacked by 20 guys and fought them off,
but one at a time...not all at once.
That's movies and TV...make believe.
In real life, at real life distances (6-10 feet),
I believe I can defend myself with a 5 shot, 38+P
from a couple of bad guys.
Having 10 shots instead of 5, in my opinion,
will not take out bad guys 3, 4 and 5, if they all shoot too.

2 J Frames make good sense for a different reason.
If you carry one in the front pocket while driving,
is very difficult to get to. That's where a second J Frame,
in an IWB holster, makes good sense to me.
5 will be enough for a car jacker at close range.
If he brought friends for the other side of the car,
they'll get me, before I get them.

I guess what I'm trying to say is...
I've stopped worrying about more than 2 or 3.

I repeat...just my thoughts and not intended to
be funny or offend anyone else's thinking.

Everyone need to do what they feel right about but I belive in a real life situration if you are attacked by 3 or four bad guys that are determine to do you harm your high cap weapon, or speed loaders or your bug will not do you any good, it will be over so fast you won't have time. But 99% of the time these punks pick someone because they see them as an easy mark remember if they really wanted to work for what they get they would have jobs. Make a good shot or two on one of them and the rest will run that just the nature of the beast. when on duty I carry the sig they give me two extra magzines and a shotgun in the unit as this is a requierment of the job. Off duty 642 no spare ammo. So far the only times I have had personnel knowledge of multi attackers is when gang hits are done. If you really worry about this maybe you need to check out your personnel habits.

be safe

One 642 is ok, two would also be ok. If you are dedicated to pocket carry, that is a good idea.

What you're describing is a New York Reload. Fairly common. It has its pros and cons just like anything else. If you are really concerned, there is no reason not to do it. There are even double-holstered shoulder rigs for J-frames for this reason.

Carrying two

I carry a 642 with 110gr Federal HS in my right pocket and a Kel-Tec .380 with Gold Dot HPs in the left, with the 642 being the first weapon drawn. If I could afford it, I'd buy another no-lock 642 and carry two of 'em, but the budget won't take it right now.

I often carry a 642 in a pocket but I'm never far from my Israeli surplus shoulder bag that'll have wither my Glock 19 and two mags or my Colt New agent or CCO and eight full mags, a pastrami sandwich and a can of diet coke.

Krs - -

KRS, how do you like the Colt New Agent? Is it the "new" New Agent with no sights? I saw it at a recent gun show and it does look nice. Also, can you post a pic of your Israeli bag and where one might get one if they're interested? TIA.

What the hell does that mean?

Well pardon me sir. I thought you were my pal billwill from the S&W Forum (and other forums)...he is from Greensboro and everyone knows he is rolling in the money.

I guess you are some other "billwill" from W-S, 30 minutes away from G'boro.

I beg forgiveness.

Cocked & Locked

No problem, apology accepted. I had no idea what you meant. I WISH I was rolling in some money; I've been out of work for 11 months now. Winston-Salem is turning into a ghost town and we have Dell Computer, RJR, Wachovia and other companies preparing for layoffs or closings. Fun, fun.

S & W Special "Action Package" for revolvers

I called S&W and inquired about their new "Action Package." The gentlemen was very cordial and told me with a 642 or a 649, all they could do would be to modify the trigger to give it a smoother and lighter action. Cost - $80.00

I'm thinking my local gunsmith can do the same thing for probably less, BUT it would surely void the warranty.

The "Action Package" is on the S&W web site.

I carry Two revolvers at all times. Sometimes it's 38s sometimes 357s today it's a 642 in my Left Front Pocket and a SP101 IWB. Some days I pocket carry Two J-Frames and stick a 357 or Glock26 IWB.

Was thinking of something for the belt but concluded that I just hate belt carry so I will have to go with an Airweight S&W. Probably.

I'm with coach - given the scenario as described, I'm toast.

But, if we're to be picking out our ideal for a circumstance where we'll be fending off a group of thugs that needed to be bussed in, I'd nominate my "hide in plain sight" urban camouflage M134DT.

Put the magazine in the backpack with a Honda generator, wrap the barrel group in black plastic and you can go nearly anywhere.

While not a revolver in the traditional sense, I would note that the barrel group rotates. Fast.
This is the advanced tactical model:
