Brought home two new toys last week and hit the range again today with them. Figured I'd write up a short range review with my impressions.

First, S&W 29 classic 44 Mag, blue, 6 1/2". I was initially very upset when my FFL pulled it out of the box. I ordered from Buds, and it must have been a floor model. Looked like everyone and their uncle had touched it and it hadn't been cleaned. It had a light drag line. Then I thought to myself, hey I bought it to shoot..a lot. So I took it home and gave it a long cleaning.

At the range, WOW! Double action pull was as good as I've felt out of the box. Single action was sweet. Real dream to shoot.

Second, Taurus 970 in 22lr. I'm really torn on this one. It looks good. I wish you could get wood grips, don't like the ribber grips. They just feel too squishy to me. The trigger stinks. It's gotten better after a few hundred rounds, but still heavy and creepy. Very inconsistent between cylinders. A few have fairly decent pulls, a few are creepier and harder, one is horrible. I've never noticed much of a difference between cylinders on a revolver. It's very pronounced on this one. It also gets almost impossible to eject the spent casings after 100 rounds or so. Maybe both these problems will go away, but still disappointed. On the other hand, even with the trigger pull, that revolver shoots! I think I posted my best group ever at seven yards today. Better than my Ruger MkIII Competition Target which has the sweetest trigger pull I've felt. I guess you get what you pay for. A comparable smith in 22lr runs almost twice as much.

I had a 29. Keep an eye on those side plate screws. Mine were loosening up pretty frequently with the magnum loads. Mine had the 8-3/8" barrel and was QUITE accurate, especially SA.

DA, it was pretty heavy, but very smooth. Almost impossible to stage the trigger on mine. The sharp checkering on my grips rubbed my fingertips raw after only a few rounds. If yours have similar grips, you may experience something similar.

It was a nice gun, but I don't regret selling it.

The Taurus, well, they are hit or miss. I'm not sure that was a good choice, but maybe you'll bond with it anyway.
