Gun safety preached to Pottsboro youngsters

BY CYNTHIA COFFEY

HERALD Democrat

POTTSBORO -- Children at Pottsboro Elementary School learned about gun safety Wednesday afternoon as Bob Douglas, with the Grayson County Sheriff's Office, McGruff, and Eddie the Eagle, the mascot for the National Rifle Association Gun Safety program, were all on hand to teach and entertain.

The Eddie Eagle GunSafe Program is geared towards children in grades pre-K through sixth and was designed by qualified professionals such as psychologists, teachers, law enforcement personnel, and reading and curriculum specialists.

The program teaches elementary school children four important steps to take if they find a gun. "I learned. If you see a gun, stop, don't touch, leave the area, and tell an adult," said 10-year-old Hayley Belew, quoting Eddie the Eagle's rules for when you find a gun ... verbatim.

The program uses student workbooks, a seven-minute animated video, posters and student award stickers to promote the protection and safety of children.

As to whether or not this program works on children so young, Belew put all doubts to rest when she told Douglas, "My little brother was singing in his sleep last night. He was singing, stop, don't touch, leave the area, and tell an adult."

"They have sharp little minds and they pick up a lot of stuff," Douglas said. "You can never instill enough information in these kids and tell them never to pick up a gun."

Good. Kids need to know that guns aren't toys to be played with. Now when do they start teaching them to shoot?
