U.S. Brings Back the .45

Thank God. Its about time. I just hope they adopt the Sig P220 so I don't have such a hard time getting parts.

Remember the military has to use ball ammo. No hollow points allowed per the Den Hague convention. There is nothing wrong with the 9mm as long as you can put some good high speed hollow points in them. For military use a .45 FMJ might be better but ballistically it is equal to a .32 ACP HP!

ummm..... I think you mean .40S&W, the services are all going different ways on the sidearm issue, but a large number of Sig 229's has already been purchased and will be distributed starting in march for the next two years. Cross my heart and hope to die.

Nothing would make me smile more than if they Army picked up the DOA Taurus 24/7 in .45ACP

I'd like to see 'em choose the CZ-97 but I imagine the threaded barrel bushing would create reliability problems.

Sig P220 would be an excellent choice though and I imagine will be in the top two and quite possibly the winner.

I think cost (and the fact that the sucker feels like a freakin' brick in the hand) will disqualify the H&K USP45

But if push came to shove - and I really hate to say this - for pure reliability, inexpensive, accurate enough for combat and easy to maintain they sure couldn't go wrong with a Glock 21. [ducks, rolls, hunts for cover]

You know what would be really good, but it wont happen, if they were to give the REMFs something like the SIG or CZ, and give us fighters 1911s, I mean, think about it, its all about trainability, the combat MOS troops are generally better suited to learn to handle multiple weapon systems, I mean, I haven't touched a M240B in a couple of years, they're not on our MTOE, but I know I can take one apart and put it back together again blindfolded in short time. where as alot of REMFs that I've witnessed on various ranges over the years are hard pressed to handle even their 16s properly, but thats not their job.

While I'm sure the SIG is a great weapon, I've never handled one, but heard nothing but good of them, I think the 1911 platform would be better suited for the grunts and MPs in service. At least thats what I want, what can I say I'm biased.

Tough i do not carry a side arm, being a wee Bradley gunner, but,If i was gonna have to carry a side arm i would most definetly want it to be a .45ACP.
And i sure hope they are better all around compared to the m-9's that take up space in our arms room!

No, it's not. First, none of the 32 JHP's will reliably expand every time and none will expand after the HP get's clogged up with clothing. A .45 doesn't have to expand to be large caliber. Secondly the .32 severely lacks penetration even with FMJ"s, the .45 doesn't have that problem. Thirdly the .32 lacks mass, the .45 does not. Fourthly....well, you get the idea.

I'd think H&K would have the inside track on the weapon. Who knows? Maybe Ruger will have a shot at it this time. Doubt it. It holds an 8 round mag, but I bet a double stack gets the nod.

Does it say in the Geneva convention that the bullets have to be round???? Seems to me the .45 would be more effective if it had a truncated cone FMJ design with a big, flat point. Since it won't be used in a 1911, they don't have to worry about FTFs.:D

As I recall the main reason for going to the 9MM was to share ammo with NATO allies. I guess this is no longer deemed necesary?

I agree the .45 is better if limited to ball ammo. But you know some guys will complain about the lower mag capity.

Now, now...you're ALL wrong! Make mine a--

I haven't given up on my fantasy of a .454 Casull in a 1911 frame...double stacked of course. Use a long enough crowbar and it'll HAVE to fit!

Seriously, a 1911 in .45 ACP. Wow, that would be sweet...single stacked all the way for military purposes.

Today I purchased my first-ever high-cap .45 ACP, the new Springfield XD--I can't wait to see how it shoots. It's a bit bigger than the 9MM XD, the grip is a bit longer, but it is pretty much what they advertised. And wait until you see what they did with the speed-loader...it's wild. It hooks to the magazine holder, so you insert the empty magazine into the speed loader while connected to your belt. Sounds unnatural, but I swear it feels natural! It's an awesome package for $549.00!

But, then I picked up my Warrior, my Colts, and my Glock--I would NOT sell any of them yet. I still like them and plan to keep all. Nice collection after all.

But, there's something about knowing you have 14 rounds of .45 ACP on hand needing no reload that tends to bolster confidence that one is by no means "out-gunned".

Think if I write Springfield they might chamber an XD in .454 Casull? Psych! Not!

Reissue the 1911a1 with Novak Tritium sights! I just bought an Ithaca 1943 1911a1 and will do that as somebody has already lowered the ejection port:cuss: for some stupid reason:banghead: Otherwise the thing is perfect as is, with all GI parts. I like it better than my other 7 1911 Colt variations:p for real killing people type stuff!:D

I think the discussion was pistols...heck, pack a .50 BMG and you're still out-gunned

Seems to me what when long-guns come into discussion, the A-10 Wart Hog trumps them all. But, I'll stick to the pistol issue. I haven't seen many people walking about with Bushmasters, MIAs or the like stuck down their bathing suits.

Old news..try the search function there are several threads on this. Yes, there is a program, yes the program is looking for pistols in .45. Now the way the defense establishment moves we might see a new pistol before soldiers who enlist today retire.

We started our first program to adopt a 9mm pistol in 1946 or 47 and actually fielded one in 1985. Don't hold your breath....

Gee, I wonder if they will go with a 1911 style or maybe the new XD45ACP.....

13+1....

Hmmmm.....

When the Army stops treating it's support command like the lowest form of dirt and we receive the the fair amount of training time we ask for we will handle our weapons. That's our job, if we don't.. we get killed. There is no such thing as a front line anymore. I can handle any weapon you can, blindfolded and just as profficient.
I am happy to see the .45 ACP coming back. It's hard enough to gain any type of confidence with a 9mm hardball pistol anyway. Leastways with a .45 pistol you can have a little more confidence on what it'll do.
I could never imagine being too comfortable with just a pistol in theater of war. If I had to and if it was my only weapon I'd make it my second weapon of choice fast.

OH! I'm certian the army will go with a 100 year old unsafe to carry as well as being impossible to mass produce handgun that only holds 8rds:evil:

NOT

The 1911 would work because the grip size would fit most all tof the soldiers issued sidearms.

The XD covers the high capacity with ease, and is American owned (SA is still American right?).

HK has the proven reliability, and can cover any FCG requests.

I hope they don't go the P220 route. O V E R R A T E D
