I was in 5 years, 4.5 of which I was on sea duty. I was a Machinist's Mate. Took care of the enginerooms and all the other mechanical equipment on the ship. My rate was "critical". Which meant, among other things, that my rotation was 4 years sea duty / 2 years shore duty.

Iceberg effect people. We only see the part of the job that bumps against ours.

As an old Soldier, US Army Ordnance Corps, 1972 - 82, who remembers, "Six days shall thou work and do all thou art able, the Seventh the same, and clean out the stable." The world is a vast and wonderful and dangerous place, and the Defense of the US of A can never be predicted.

The Navy has a huge capital investment, like a TRILLION dollars for an aircraft carrier, and supporting that fleet is an incredible job.

Trained people aren't numbers or chips. You can't take a sonar specialist, give him a rifle and drop him in Afganistan.

Neither can anyone predict what will happen tomorrow.

Who was young when he walked the decks of a warship the first time, and realized there was no place to dig a foxhole.

What kind of sailor would ever wish for shore duty? :p

I'm just saying that because I never could get shore duty either, other than A school and C school.
I actually got shore duty in the Philippines, Subic Bay - two times during the 1980s. For me it was the best liberty spot in the world.

Ahhhhhhh, Subic Bay! Nothing beat a little R&R in Olongapo, the Barrio and/or Subic City. Toadman, I also spend a LOT of time there in the mid to late 80s. That place brings up a lot of memories. Luckily ones that never ended with me in line at the infirmiry.

Former ET1/SS here, ported in La Mad a bit in 91, great place, great sailors, but waiting for a liberty launch just to get off the post blew.

What you needed was the liberty boats we had in Thailand. They stocked the 20% Thai beer right there on the boat and there was enough time to drink 2 before you hit the beach. You KNOW it's going to be a good liberty if you're half in the bag before you ever set foot on land...

They had one of those launches in Palma, too. ;)
