Uberti 357 Cattleman

I also called Taylor's about the large throats in my Uberti .357 . Its throats measure 0.365" with gage pins. A copy of a Uberti drawing was sent to me with no warning about confidentiality so I'll attempt to post it here. The only slightly confusing thing is the tolerance note at the bottom. A google search on the ISO reference still left some doubt in my mind but the 0.366" dimension is plain as day.

Obviously you are very technically savvy. I would have never measured and checked other than cleaning and give it a good once over, not including measuring equipment. I would have shot it and unless there was something obviously wrong would not have measured anything. Even in a CNC world there are no two things exactly alike, that’s why there are tolerances.

wcwhitey, amen. Somewhere a customer service rep's head exploded over some things consumers worry about. Appreciate the OP's ability to measure things, but do wonder if he pulls the head on his car, making sure the pistons are in spec for the bore.
Sigh.

I think I would just try a new cyl from VTI.

I just got a "used but not shot" Pietta Frontier from Cimarron in 45C. The hand channel was way out of spec and allowed throw-by rather easily . . . which meant the cyl had some "oops marks" on it. I ordered a SS 45C cyl for it as well as a blued 45acp cyl. It shoots very nicely with either cyl. and runs like a fool!!! Lol

The Uberti did not get returned, due to the acquisition fees, FFL etc etc, which in total would be around $250.00 and approximately half the cost of the revolver. For the moment it will be a wall hanger or paperweight. I will be running a test review on it for a You Tube video in the future. If it shoots good, fair enough. If it is bad, then I think others should know before making a purchase.
I have emailed Uberti in Italy last week, and still awaiting a reply. I also want to know the spec for their 45 colt version.

No, I measure everything I get back from the machine shop before I assemble the engines, so everything has to be measured accurately. Some tolerances need to be less than 0.001'' and are critical, especially when customers are paying 15 to 20 thousand or more for a rebuilt engine. Been doing it for close to 45 years, and the so call best machine shops in town, for the most part, are not.
It would have been just as easy for Uberti to make the throats to accept .358 or 0.359'' throats with a correct reamer, than what they offer. Maybe they don't understand too much about firearms, or just don't care, or most likely, they had a production run of cylinders made with reamers that were ground incorrectly.
The date on their cylinder drawing was after my gun was made.

VTI has cylinders but they can not measure them, but will allow me to return them if I don't like the throat sizes. Depending when they were manufactured they may all be 0.366''.

According to the Uberti drawing, dated Dec. 21, 2021, they MAY all be that size. My gun is date coded 2022. In looking up the tolerance meaning, I thought I had seen a Maximum Material Condition call-out on in the ISO specs but now cannot find it. I too measure things like bore size and bullet fit to cylinder throats.

I'll be interested to learn about cylinder throat dimensions from other calibers in newly made Cattlemen.

Later I searched again and the MMC was on the SAAMI drawing of the .357 chamber. Also I read the wrong column in the ISO tolerance specs. It was even larger than I thought at plus or minus 0.2mm (plus or minus 0.008 inches) !

Some readers here are not in the least excited but I will be doing something about this if I find bad shooting results. I expect to fire the gun with standard .358 sized cast bullets this weekend.

You are over thinking this. The SAAMI drawing is from before ISO. If you read the note, it says All Dia +.004. I take that to mean -.000 and +.004 in the old plus and minus notation. So the chamber throat diameter called out is .358 -.000/+.004. Or .358 to .362. Personally, I would probably be unhappy with a 357 Mag chamber throat of .362, but that is what the SAAMI spec says.

As I said earlier, I don't have any Uberti 357 Mag revolvers, but a quick survey of a Ruger and S&W cylinder showed chamber throats right at .357.

I have a bit of OCD myself, but I would shoot the gun and observe the results before I tried to return it or before buying a new cylinder. This is not a target revolver. What sort of accuracy would be acceptable to you from this gun?

I own 6 Uberti and 2 Pietta all from the different U.S. distributors. They all shoot just fine, the only issue I had is with the timing and getting the springs the way I like.
Accuracy of the guns has never been an issue. The El Patron Comp is about as good as a six gun can be and used by many cowboy shooters but they aren't exactly target revolvers either.

Driftwood Johnson,
I am familiar with all you wrote above. I of course saw the tolerance range of the SAAMI drawing for the linear measurements. Both the O.P.s gun and my own are well outside that tolerance range . I do plan to shoot the gun first but am ready to act by changing calibers if needed to satisfy my own concerns.

I would be real interested in hearing from owners of older .357 Cattlemen if they have measured throat size. Obtaining an older cylinder might be better for my own desires.

I had two brand new El Patron .357 magnum revolvers fail miserably on me. If you do a search you can read the entire Saga here.

I will say that Beretta Stoeger in Accokeek MD. was responsive and paid return shipping try emailing or calling them at their 800 number. They will fix your new gun or try hard to make it right.
