A gentleman on another thread posted of painting his rifle stock with Rustoleum texture instead of Cerakote, and it inspired me. I dislike the black synthetic stocks so common these days, and my new Tikka T1x was no exception. I really like the way it turned out. The color is lighter than the spray can indicates, but I like it more this way. It cost less than a tenth of the price for Cerakote and the texture is nicer in my opinion. Picture heavy post. I forgot the ‘before’ one, so it’s a website image. I think it's a really nice option. I did a banged up walnut stock in automotive trunk paint probably 20yrs ago. It turned out "nice" and held up well. Thinking about doing a Ruger American "GoWild" stock.

I was gonna suggest the trunk paint!

I did similar to my old 20ga 870. Degreased it and sprayed truck bed liner on it. The closer to the workpiece, the coarser the texture. Back about 18" away and mist it. It creates a nice real fine sand type finish. Then i sprayed some flat OD green over the top. Ive also done the same process on an AICS chassis.

I did the rustoleum thing for a while. Unfortunately it does not hold up over time, especially with a fair amount of shooting. The coating is just not meant to handle the pressure, recoil, etc. for use with any extended firearm usage. It always holds up for a while but eventually will break down anywhere near the action

I did similar. I really didn't like the black rifle stock on my Marlin XS7. I've experimented with hydrodipping some but for this one I painted it with Rustoleum Army green paint (2 coats), then hit it with a bit of black web spray by Montana, then did about 3 or 4 coats of spray polyurethane on it. I've had it this way less than a year so I can't comment too much on durability but no issues so far - and with the intentional black webbing if a bit of paint does rub off in some spots it'd be a bit hard to tell initially anyways.

My one experiment with truck bed liner paint was on a remodeled Encore forend:

This is a Choate forend with the tip cut back and the impressed checkering removed with a belt sander. The spray-on truck bed liner paint was a perfect match in color and texture to this T/C buttstock, and to my eye looks better than T/C's own forend.

These two got a new coat of camo for deer season. I wiped them clean of anything noticable but I plan to continue updating camo as needed so I don't give wear a second thought. I will update as needed based on climate, mission and wear. They're just cheap tools only useful if they fulfill their purpose, that's the attitude I've adopted and I enjoy shooting more because of that instead of worrying about damaging value by using it how I want.

I got a good friend member here, who’s embarrassed by his rifle paint job… If he post it here, please don’t pick on him.

thanks!
