No barbed wire...it might hurt the thieves, allotment holders told

A gardener who fenced off his allotment with barbed wire after being targeted by thieves has been ordered to take it down – in case intruders scratch themselves.

Bill Malcolm erected the 3ft fence after thieves struck three times in just four months, stealing tools worth around £300 from his shed and ransacking his vegetable patch.

But Bromsgrove district council has ordered the 61-year-old to remove the waist-high fence on health and safety grounds.

Mr Malcolm, who has grown potatoes, onions, beetroot and asparagus on two patches at the Round Hill allotments in Marlbrook, Worcestershire, for the past eight years, said: 'It's an absolutely ridiculous situation.

'All I wanted was to protect my property but the wire had to go in case a thief scratched himself.

'The fence was just a single strand and ringing my property. It was only 3ft high – it wasn't as though I'd dug a moat filled with piranha fish and erected 6ft iron railings.

'The council said they were unhappy about the precautions I had made but my response was to tell them that only someone climbing over on to my allotment could possibly hurt themselves.

'They shouldn't be trespassing in the first place but the council apologised and said they didn't want to be sued by a wounded thief.

'I told them to let the thief sue me so at least that way I would know who was breaking into my allotment but everything I said fell on deaf ears. It seems as though they are so wrapped up in red tape, they are unable to help me.'

Mr Malcolm said he had been robbed three times since June, along with around 16 of the 50 allotment keepers on the site.

'About £300 worth of tools were taken, including everything from a stainless steel border spade and pitchforks to screwdrivers and hammers,' he added. 'The thieves cut through steel locks on the shed, or broke in through the windows. I caught one lad of about 16 red-handed.

'He dropped the bag of tools and fled, but although the police took a description and finger prints, I heard nothing. Another time yobs broke in and completely trashed my potato and vegetable patches.

'A lot of people, myself included, are growing our own veg to beat the credit crunch. But what's the point if they are going to be ripped up by mindless idiots?

'I take care of this allotment but it's very demoralising to have your belongings stolen and your hard work ruined.'

A spokesman for Bromsgrove council said: 'With regard to the barbed wire, when this is identified on site, we are obliged to request its removal or remove it on health and safety grounds.'

Sergeant Nick Husbands, of West Mercia Police, said: 'We can confirm that five thefts from Round Hill allotments have been reported in the past year.

'These have mainly been from sheds and our advice to allotment holders is not to leave anything of value there.'

Mr Malcolm's plight comes just weeks after Bristol council angered allotment holders by urging them not to lock their sheds in case burglars damaged them breaking in.

Is this 'Bristol Council' on the thieves payroll or something ???

We recall our elected officials/politicians all the time when they get waaaay out of hand (well at least sometimes); is that an option for the Brits in this community?

Bet they wish Adams,Franklin,Jefferson & Co were in on their Constitution..Assuming they have one??
Let's make sure we keep ours!!

:confused:Well I guess the next step is a law MANDATING the victims provide tea and crumpets because it would be cruel and traumatic to force a thief to go away hungry.

There is a country that is crying out to be occupied by a hostile foreign army.

They have competely handed the country to the bad guys over the past few years.
Don't shoot anything more than a rimfire, no knives, no barbed wire. They should just have all residents line up and hand over all their belongings on a weekly basis to crooks.

The thieves cut through steel locks on the shed, or broke in through the windows.
Better take those windows out. They might cut themselves on the glass.

'These have mainly been from sheds and our advice to allotment holders is not to leave anything of value there.'
Yeah, leaving tools in a tool shed is just asking for trouble.

The UK has pretty well become a blueprint for how to screw up a decent country.

There is a country that is crying out to be occupied by a hostile foreign army.

I volunteer. Think about it. There would be no significant resistance from the unarmed populous, and people would be running to the recruiting offices here in the States for a chance to deploy to London. I'm liking this idea more and more.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't barbed wire supposed to hurt? Isn't that what makes it a good deterrent?

isn't rediculous laws one of the reasons we americans wanted to break away from great britten? here is an idea, booby trap the door from the inside so that when the theives open the door, they get splashed with a nice coat of dye of some sort. something that will stain their skin. that should make the bobbies job a litte easier. "just look for the person with the orange skin!" my brother did this when a guy he worked with kept taking his tools, and leaving them all over the shop. my brother is a machinist, so he used layout dye in a shallow cup propelled by a flat spring. one day, he came into work, and there was a guy with a blue face! it didn't take long for my brother, the guy, and the supervisor to have words in the office! needless to say, the problem went away.

I thought Great Brittan founded the invention of the man trap, booby trap, and other tinkerer solutions to theft deterrent. Then again, I get my sources from Wallas & Grommet and other Bri'ish television.

I like the dye solution, but would rather see a flammable solvent used. Crook gets drenched in a bucket of kerosene and detained by the gardener's tiki-torches.

It is gun related. Guns are often used by Americans to deal with criminal predators. It is interesting to note what the same mindset that sees guns vs criminals as a bad thing progresses to once firearms have been essentialy banned.
As we see it does not even stop at guns. Once those are restricted beyond use it progresses to knives, and even errecting fences that might hurt a thief.
Self defense of self and property even in passive ways we take for granted like pointy fences is unacceptable.

Gun rights are on the front lines against this mindset. Since they are one of the most effective tools, they are what most with that mindset target.
So it should be a reminder to fight for gun rights.

Those with these mindsets always want to "reach a compromise" where you lose something and gain nothing. Then another "compromise". The "compromises" and "common sense" "for the children" suggestions never stop, and every time you give an inch, it is an inch you will never likely get back, and they certainly won't stop there.

That would be so inhuman to the poor thieves, as the dye might get into and sting their eyes. Oh how cruel! Not to mention the emotional trauma and damage to self esteem that would come from people snickering at their new green or orange pigment.

You're the best for asking this in every single thread. Not saying this is gun related, just that I have to laugh when I see that message 20 times a day.

ok, i didn't read all the other posts. but this idea just came to me. why not install one of those hunting game camera's somewhere the theives could not reach it without a lot of work or arousal of other people. then you could give the police a photo of the theif and fix him for good.
